Pence Aide Who Trashed Trump Is Running for Congress as a Democrat but Her District Does Not Exist Yet

Mike Pence's top national security aide stood on the Democrat National Convention stage in 2024 and begged Republicans to vote for Kamala Harris.

Now she wants a seat in Congress – and Democrats just drew her a new district to make it happen.

There is just one problem with her plan that Virginia voters will decide today.

From Pence Aide to MAGA Enemy

Troye spent four years presenting herself to America as a Republican – a "John McCain Republican," she called herself, someone with principled objections to one man's behavior.

That’s not surprising since John McCain was always closer to Abigail Spanberger than real Republicans.

She resigned from Pence's homeland security and COVID task force team in July 2020. Within weeks she was endorsing Joe Biden and cutting anti-Trump ads for a Never-Trumper political action committee.

By 2024 she was on the Democrat National Convention stage, telling her "fellow Republicans" that voting for Harris wasn't betraying their party – it was standing up for their country.

She now runs a Substack with 365,000 subscribers built entirely around hating Trump.

Last week Troye filed FEC paperwork to run for Congress in Virginia – not as a Republican, not as an independent, but as a full-throated Democrat. Her own campaign materials call her "a proud Democrat" and "MAGA's top enemy." She became the first candidate to officially declare for the new 7th District, jumping ahead of former Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe and a field of state legislators already circling the race.

She didn't slowly drift left. She announced herself as the enemy.

The seat she wants is Virginia's proposed new 7th Congressional District – a seat that, as of this morning, still does not legally exist.

The Lobster District and the Gerrymander Democrats Need Today

In 2020, two-thirds of Virginia voters amended their state constitution to put congressional map-drawing in the hands of a bipartisan commission.

Democrats cheered it.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger said in 2019 that "gerrymandering is detrimental to our democracy." Democrats made that argument for years – right up until Republicans in other states redrew their own maps and Democrats decided principles were optional.

Virginia's Democrat-controlled state government then rammed through a new constitutional amendment to hand map-drawing back to the legislature. The result is a contorted district stretching over 100 miles that combines wealthy Washington, D.C., suburbs with rural Republican communities – a shape Republicans have dubbed the lobster claw – engineered to manufacture a seat Democrats would hold permanently.

If that map passes, Democrats flip Virginia's congressional delegation from a current 6-5 advantage to a 10-1 stranglehold.

Virginia voters decide today whether that map becomes law.

Troye's campaign has said she will not enter the race if the gerrymander fails. Her entire candidacy depends on Democrats dismantling the bipartisan commission Virginians built with a two-thirds supermajority vote – and replacing it with a contorted seat drawn to give Never-Trumpers a permanent address in Congress.

What Troye Reveals About the Never-Trump Class

Troye is not an anomaly. She is the pattern.

Charlie Crist spent years calling himself a Republican, bolted the party in 2010, became a Democrat in 2012, and won a congressional seat. David Jolly left the GOP in 2018, spent years lecturing Republicans on cable news, and formally joined the Democrat Party in 2025. Every one of these figures ran the same script – resign with fanfare, build a media career on Trump attacks, then cash in by running as a Democrat in a friendly district.

Troye's own announcement video made her intentions explicit. "The evil I saw in that White House was staggering," she said.

This was never a Republican with honest disagreements. This was someone who despised Trump, despised his voters, and spent four years waiting for the right vehicle to say so publicly.

She found it.

The Pence wing of the Republican Party – the people who spent 2020 through 2024 claiming they were still conservatives fighting from the inside – has now fully revealed itself. Troye, Kinzinger, Cheney, and the rest were never going to come back. They were building toward this. Running as Democrats. Running against the voters they once represented.

The question today is whether Virginia hands them the map to do it.
