Now the party's top Republican pollster says Newsom is far from the only problem.

McLaughlin Says the Democrat Bench Is Rotten From the Top Down
Jim McLaughlin has been polling presidential races since Ronald Reagan was in the White House.
He helped elect Donald Trump twice.
So when McLaughlin looks at the Democrat Party's 2028 bench and calls it a bunch of failures, Democrats should be terrified.
McLaughlin didn't pull punches on Newsmax.
He said the party's potential 2028 candidates are burdened by records of failure.
Every single name being floated carries the same problem.
They've already lost with voters once.
Newsom is presiding over a homelessness and cost-of-living crisis in California that still hasn't been fixed.
Shapiro can't even convince his own state he'd make a good president.
A Quinnipiac poll out of Pennsylvania found just 40 percent of his own voters think he'd be a good president.
Forty three percent said no.
That's not a launching pad.
That's a warning sign.
The Pattern Goes Back a Decade
This isn't the first time Democrats have run out failed retreads and called it a bench.
Hillary Clinton ran in 2016 as the most qualified candidate in history.
She lost to Donald Trump.
Kamala Harris ran in 2024 as the sitting vice president with the full weight of the party machine behind her.
She lost too.
Now the same donor class and the same consultants are shopping around Newsom, who told Atlanta's Black mayor he related to him because he himself struggles to read.
They're shopping Shapiro, who can't crack 50 percent approval in his own backyard.
They're even floating Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist from Queens, as some kind of answer for Middle America.
McLaughlin's read is blunt.
The party is hooked on identity politics and has lost the ability to speak to anyone outside its own coastal echo chamber.
The centrist Democrat playbook that once won national elections is dead in today's primaries.
That's not an insult.
That's McLaughlin's actual diagnosis, and it explains why every name on the list keeps stumbling the moment they leave a friendly room.
The Party Can't Even Agree Where the Money Goes
Conservative analysts tracking the 2028 landscape see a second problem stacking on top of the first.
A field this crowded and this weak splits megadonor money in every direction before a single primary vote is cast.
Newsom, Shapiro, Ocasio-Cortez, and Harris are all fishing from the same shrinking donor pool at the same time.
None of them can lock down the kind of institutional money a frontrunner needs this early.
That's not a deep bench.
That's a bidding war nobody can win.
Republicans Are Watching a Different Bench Entirely
While Democrats fight over a wide open scramble, McLaughlin says the Republican bench is stacked.
JD Vance holds a commanding lead in early Republican primary polling.
Rubio and DeSantis trail him, but they're credible, proven statewide winners.
That's not a coincidence.
That's what happens when a party actually delivers wins instead of excuses.
Republicans aren't debating whether their candidates can connect with voters.
They're debating which winner runs next.
Trump built a bench of governors and senators who actually win general elections, and McLaughlin says that gap between the parties is only getting wider heading into 2026 and 2028.
This Is the Real 2028 Story
Democrats keep telling themselves 2028 is their comeback.
McLaughlin just told Newsmax viewers the truth.
The field is a bunch of failures running on the same failed playbook that lost twice already.
Newsom's Atlanta stumble wasn't a one-off gaffe.
It was a preview of a party that still doesn't understand why it keeps losing, and now can't even agree on who gets the money to try.
Columnist Kurt Schlichter reached the same conclusion this week, warning Democrats are heading into 2028 with no clear way out of their own mess.
They've already lost, they've already stumbled, and voters already know it.
That's the story heading into 2028, whether the Democrat Party wants to admit it or not.
