New York City's new government grocery stores will scan your ID before you can buy a gallon of milk.
The socialist mayor completely missed the irony.
But this is exactly what President Trump used to challenge Mamdani and one his biggest GOP enemies in front of the cameras this week.
NYC Admits Grocery Shoppers Need ID While Voters Do Not
He calls it a tool of suppression, and has for years.
But on July 27, standing in front of cameras to unveil his city-run grocery chain, Mamdani built the exact system he's condemned for a decade.
Jeanny Pak, the interim president and CEO of the NYC Economic Development Corporation, explained that shoppers would need a "library card-esque" system to get through checkout.
The goal, according to Pak, was to keep the discounted food away from resellers and reserve it for actual New Yorkers.
Translation: New York needs to verify who shoppers are before they get government cheese.
It’s obvious why – rats are gonna try to steal the cheese because someone else is paying for it.
That’s how socialism works.
Of course, the one thing NYC under Mamdani doesn't want to do is verify who you are before you cast a ballot.
The stores carry a price tag north of seventy million dollars, and the first location isn't expected to open until the end of 2027.
This isn't even the first time Mamdani has quietly required ID from working New Yorkers.
City Hall previously demanded residents produce two forms of identification just to volunteer as emergency snow shovelers during winter storms.
Conservatives noticed the pattern immediately.
Elon Musk summed it up in three words after the grocery clip went viral: "Oh, the irony is too much."
City officials have offered no real plan for verifying residency at checkout beyond the card system itself.
They also haven't explained how the stores will stop non-residents or even illegal immigrants from using them, since Mamdani has never proposed requiring proof of citizenship for anything else in New York City.
Trump Uses the Moment to Demand Senate Action on SAVE Act
President Trump wasted no time connecting the dots.
Asked about Mamdani's grocery ID plan during a White House appearance Monday, Trump pivoted straight to the fight Democrats have been losing for months.
"I wish they'd have an ID to access the voting booth," Trump said.
He reminded reporters that New York's own snow-shoveling program already required identification, and asked why voting should be treated differently.
Trump also pushed the Senate to scrap its August break entirely rather than adjourn without passing the SAVE America Act, the bill requiring proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote.
It's a message Trump has repeated for months while Senate Majority Leader John Thune insists his caucus doesn't have the votes to nuke the filibuster and force the bill through.
Republican defectors and unified Democratic opposition have kept the bill stalled on the Senate floor for months.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called voter ID requirements "Jim Crow 2.0."
Somehow that same objection never applies to a loyalty card at a government grocery store.
The Argument Mamdani Just Handed Republicans
Mamdani just handed Republicans the cleanest argument they've had all year, and he did it to himself.
For a decade Democrats have told 65-year-old grandmothers that showing a driver's license at the polls is an act of racial oppression, while their own socialist mayor requires a card to buy discounted milk.
Every Senate Democrat who votes against the SAVE America Act this fall will have to explain why a New York City grocery line deserves more security than a national election.
Thune can keep telling Trump the math isn't there, but the politics just changed, because now Republicans don't need a hypothetical to make the case.
They have a video of Mamdani's own people admitting they check ID to stop people from cheating the system, which is exactly the argument Republicans have made about voting since Trump first raised it.
Every campaign consultant in Washington already knows what happens next, because a video this clean writes its own thirty-second ad.
Expect Mamdani's checkout line to show up in Republican midterm ads next to footage of Democrats calling voter ID racist, and expect Democrats running in swing districts to have no good answer for it.
