Democrats spent all summer screaming that Meta smart glasses were destroying privacy in America.
Then Trump's DHS asked to use the same technology to catch illegal immigrants – and Democrats killed it.
What they did next tells you exactly who they're actually protecting.
The Privacy Crisis Democrats Suddenly Cared About
By August 2026, Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses had earned a nickname that said everything: "pervert glasses."
A BBC investigation found dozens of male influencers using the glasses to secretly film women on the street. A woman named Toluwa Omitowoju found out she'd been recorded by a stranger only when people she hadn't spoken to in years started sending her the clip. It had already hit 200,000 views before she knew it existed.
"I had no say," she told CBS News.
She was right. The glasses include a tiny LED light designed to signal active recording – but when CBS News tested it, journalists found that covering the light after filming had started did nothing to stop the camera. Meta eventually bricked the cameras on thousands of pairs of glasses after discovering users were deliberately disabling the indicator to film people without their knowledge.
Democrats introduced legislation. Senators wrote letters. Privacy, they declared, was sacred.
Then ICE Started Wearing the Exact Same Glasses
Here's what Democrats never mentioned.
ICE agents were already wearing Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses in at least six states during Trump's immigration operations – walking neighborhoods, running enforcement, doing the job Democrats have spent years trying to make impossible.
When Trump's DHS moved to go further – requesting $7.5 million to develop purpose-built smart glasses giving ICE agents real-time biometric identification in the field – Democrats discovered a new emergency.
Senators Ed Markey and Jeff Merkley led a group of colleagues demanding DHS abandon the proposal entirely. Their letter insisted Americans have a right to "move through daily life without fear that the federal government is tracking, scanning, and cataloguing their every step."
The same senators who spent months demanding accountability for covert filming of unsuspecting women decided that identifying people who entered the country illegally was the real threat to American values.
The Difference Democrats Don't Want You to Notice
Here is what Democrats actually believe about smart glasses technology:
When a pickup artist films an unsuspecting woman at a coffee shop and posts it to TikTok without her consent, that is a privacy crisis requiring federal legislation and furious Senate letters.
When an ICE agent walking a street in Illinois uses the same technology to identify a criminal illegal alien during a deportation operation, that is a constitutional threat to civil liberties requiring DHS to shut the entire program down.
The technology is identical. The LED light is the same. The camera is the same. The only variable is who gets caught.
Women filmed without consent by strangers don't have Democrat senators flying to their defense. They get a form letter.
But illegal immigrants – people who broke federal law to enter this country and are actively evading enforcement – those are the people Markey and Merkley lose sleep over.
Democrats Aren't Worried About Privacy
They're worried about deportations.
Every effective enforcement tool Trump deploys closes a loophole Democrats depend on – the gap between federal law on the books and federal law as actually enforced. An ICE agent pulling out a phone to run a facial recognition check gives a subject time to turn and walk away. Smart glasses eliminate that window. People who could previously blend into a crowd and evade a handheld scan become identifiable the moment an agent looks at them.
That's what Markey and Merkley are actually fighting. Not surveillance. Not privacy. The specific technology that makes their preferred non-enforcement impossible.
Republicans on Capitol Hill understood immediately. They didn't hold press conferences. They didn't write alarmed letters to DHS. They looked at what the technology does – finds people who broke the law and removes them – and concluded that was the point.
Privacy is a principle Democrats weaponize selectively. When the camera catches a woman at a coffee shop, it's a civil rights emergency. When the same camera catches someone who crossed the border illegally, it's suddenly an unconstitutional overreach. The only difference is which constituency gets protected – and it isn't yours.
