The White House spent months compiling proof that Smithsonian curators buried George Washington under gender identity displays.
Tuesday, the man who ran that museum system for seven years announced he's finally walking away.
What investigators uncovered in his museum halls is the real reason he's gone.
White House Report Found No Founding Fathers Exhibit at Smithsonian's American History Museum
Bunch is leaving the Smithsonian by the end of the year.
His statement talked about "mixed emotions and heartfelt gratitude."
It didn't mention the 162-page report that landed two months earlier.
That report came from the White House Domestic Policy Council.
Investigators combed the National Museum of American History and came up empty on the nation's founding.
No major exhibit for Washington.
No major exhibit for Jefferson.
No major exhibit for the Continental Congress.
The White House report says Benjamin Franklin's exhibit label focuses mainly on his ties to slavery, with little mention of his abolitionist work or his part in founding the nation.
One exhibit label sums up Alexander Hamilton as "an influential and flawed founding father" and leaves it there.
Those same findings flagged chest binders, a crotch harness, and the diary of a girl wrestling with her gender identity among the museum's displays.
This isn't the first time a Smithsonian museum picked ideology over history and paid for it.
In 1995, the National Air and Space Museum tried to open an Enola Gay exhibit that veterans groups said stripped out Japanese wartime aggression and cast American airmen as the villains.
Congress revolted, the exhibit got gutted, and the museum director resigned months later.
Thirty years later, a different museum is following the same script.
Trump Administration Pressure Timeline Contradicts Bunch's Retirement Story
Bunch says the fights with the administration played no role in his decision.
The calendar says something different.
On August 28, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley sent Smithsonian leadership a letter threatening to cut off federal cooperation, artifact loans, and grants.
Eleven days later, Bunch announced he's out.
The museum spent the summer insisting it stays neutral, with its own director telling Congress the museum doesn't take sides in political debates.
That's a hard sell when investigators say the museum found room for a Southern Poverty Law Center partnership but not for Washington's crossing of the Delaware.
Chief Justice John Roberts, who chairs the Smithsonian's Board of Regents, praised Bunch on his way out the door.
Roberts didn't mention the report either.
Josh Hawley Says Good Riddance to Smithsonian's Departing Chief
Senator Josh Hawley wasn't in a praising mood.
The Missouri Republican reacted to the resignation with two words: "Good riddance."
Hawley went further, saying Bunch should return his salary to taxpayers on the way out.
That's not a fringe take.
That's a sitting United States senator saying out loud what a lot of taxpayers have been thinking since July.
The Smithsonian Didn't Lose Its Leader over One Bad Label
Here's what actually happened: taxpayers fund a museum system built to tell America's story, and its leaders decided that story is mostly about oppression – then acted stunned when Congress finally opened the file.
Getting caught doesn't produce a retirement letter dressed in warm, grateful language.
It produces spin, and Bunch's statement is spin, dressed up enough to make you forget a federal report just tore through his museum's credibility.
Republicans didn't need one bad exhibit label to make their case.
They needed a paper trail, and the White House report gave them one.
Hawley's "good riddance" is the sentence Bunch's own resignation statement should have started with.
Whoever the Board of Regents picks next has one job: bring the Founders back, or watch Congress finish what this report started.
