John Fetterman dared his own party's Senate nominee to keep campaigning with Hasan Piker this summer.
Now that same streamer is headed to a taxpayer-funded Texas campus with millions of followers watching.
Only one Texas Democrat was willing to say what the rest of his party wouldn't.
A Democrat Finally Says What Cruz And Abbott Already Knew
Hasan Piker is a Twitch star with 14 million monthly viewers and a habit of saying things Democrats spend months apologizing for.
University Democrats at UT Austin booked him anyway for a September 30 talk on immigration, "genocide," and the future of their party.
Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott, and Ken Paxton condemned the invite within days.
Rep. Henry Cuellar called the appearance "deeply concerning" and said Piker's record on Jewish Americans, 9/11, and Hamas doesn't earn a pass just because free speech exists.
Cruz went further, calling Piker an "America-hating Marxist" who has praised political violence against Republicans.
Piker's response wasn't an apology.
He named Cruz, Abbott, Paxton, and Cuellar in a single post and accused all four of a "direct violation" of the First Amendment.
A man who once said America "deserved 9/11" is now the one lecturing Texas about the Constitution.
This Isn't The First Campus To Get Cold Feet
Piker was supposed to headline the University of Washington's Speaker Series back in January.
UW killed it in August, claiming the "process" for booking him didn't meet the school's standards.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression didn't buy the explanation, and neither should you – a public university found a paperwork excuse the moment the backlash got loud enough.
UT Austin's own student Democrats are now accusing their school of the same trick, claiming administrators can't seem to find a room large enough for interest that already topped 2,500 sign-ups.
Two campuses, one pattern – give Hasan Piker a microphone, and the institution suddenly discovers a process problem.
Democrats Have Been Running From This Fight All Year
Cuellar isn't the first Democrat to flinch at Piker – he's just the first one in Texas.
Fetterman already threw his dare down over the summer.
Illinois Rep. Brad Schneider accused colleagues of risking the party's credibility by "platforming" him.
Even Fox News's own tracking shows more Democrats criticizing Piker as the year goes on, not fewer.
That's the tell.
When your own side won't defend you on camera, you're not a rising star – you're a problem everyone's hoping quietly disappears before November.
Why Democrats Keep Getting Cornered On This
Piker built his audience by telling young men the Democratic Party stopped listening to them, and his viewer count proves plenty of people bought it.
That reach is exactly why Democrats can't just cut him loose – they need the voters he's pulling in more than they want to admit.
So instead of a real answer, most of the party stays quiet while Fetterman and Schneider do the work Democratic leadership won't.
James Talarico, running for Senate in the same state where this is unfolding, didn't respond when reporters asked him about it either.
Silence is a choice, not an accident, and Texas voters are going to remember exactly which Democrats made it before they mark a ballot.
Cuellar didn't have to say anything about a streamer his own party's activists invited onto campus.
He did anyway, and that's exactly why Republicans will keep running this story straight through the midterms.
