Celebrity candidates used to be something most folks only joked about.
But Donald Trump opened the door for celebrities, entertainers, and other famous people to run for political office and win.
And a famous Hollywood Star just announced he may run for the highest office in this important red state.
Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, who was born and raised in Texas, is apparently now making calls to influential groups and individuals in Texas to discuss the potential of him running for Governor in 2022.
“But the Academy Award-winning actor’s interest goes a step further than musings in interviews. McConaughey has been quietly making calls to influential people in Texas political circles, including a deep-pocketed moderate Republican and energy CEO, to take their temperature on the race and to talk about seriously throwing his hat in the ring, according to multiple people familiar with the conversations,” POLITICO reports.
As for his political affiliation, McConaughey refers to himself as a committed centrist.
However, McConaughey raised questions about his views when he recently spoke out against the far-left and cancel culture.
Speaking to ITV’s Good Morning Britain, McConaughey voiced his opposition to “illiberal” views that currently dominate the radical left.
“You need liberals. What I don’t think we need is the Illibera’s, and what I don’t think that some liberals see is that they’re often being cannibalized by the illiberal,” McConaughey stated.
McConaughey added that it was leading to attacks on free speech in the form of cancel culture.
“Where the waterline is going to land on this freedom of speech, and what we allow and what we don’t and where this cancel culture goes . . . is a very interesting place that we’re engaged in right now as a society of trying to figure out, because we haven’t found the right spot,” McConaughey added.
Of course, even though no one knows which Party McConaughey would unite with if he runs for Governor in 2022, popular Republican Governor Greg Abbott has already announced his plans to seek re-election in 2022.
As an iconic native of Texas who is deeply associated with the University of Texas’ athletic programs, by running for office and taking controversial stands on the issues, McConaughey runs the risk of alienating a large portion of the Texans.
