A California Democrat just lost her temper in spectacular fashion during a congressional hearing.
Rep. Lateefah Simon erupted in anger when policy experts referenced Martin Luther King Jr. while testifying about diversity programs.
The freshman representative from the Golden State’s 12th District apparently thinks she gets to decide who can quote America’s most famous civil rights leader. Simon demanded that three witnesses stop mentioning Dr. King during Wednesday’s House Oversight Committee session examining DEI policies. The experts facing her wrath included Dan Lennington from Wisconsin’s Institute for Law & Liberty, Judge Glock representing the Manhattan Institute, and Erec Smith of the Cato Institute.
These policy experts appeared before Congress to share research about how DEI initiatives affect American institutions.
But Simon decided to launch a personal attack on their character and qualifications instead of addressing their substantive concerns.
"There are so few folks who have actually studied and is clear on the theology of King," Simon said.
"Very few of you have read and studied and have sat in Ebenezer Baptist Church so I would ask you, you keep Dr. King’s name out of your mouth!"
Simon claims ownership of civil rights legacy
Simon’s outburst revealed something disturbing about how the modern Democrat Party views America’s civil rights heritage.
According to her twisted logic, only people who have attended a specific church in Atlanta have the right to quote Martin Luther King Jr.
This is the same party that claims to champion "democracy" and "free speech" while trying to silence anyone who disagrees with their ideology.
"This is a very, very difficult conversation," she explained. "I’m a great-granddaughter of someone who had a literal yoke on her neck. A literal yoke." "And I wanna be clear that four out of the five of you last year posted on your social media the words of Dr. King," she continued
Simon apparently spent time researching the social media accounts of witnesses who would testify before the committee.
Instead of preparing substantive questions about DEI policies, she focused on attacking them for sharing quotes from one of America’s greatest leaders.
The irony is that Dr. King’s most famous words – about judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin – directly contradict the racial preferences that DEI programs promote.
The real reason Democrats hate MLK quotes
Simon’s meltdown wasn’t really about protecting Dr. King’s legacy.
It was about preventing Americans from hearing the words that expose the hypocrisy of modern "civil rights" activists.
When King said he dreamed of a day when his children would "not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," he was describing the exact opposite of what DEI programs do.
These programs explicitly judge people based on race, gender, and other characteristics rather than merit and character.
Simon knows this, which is why she doesn’t want Republicans quoting King’s actual words.
She accused the witnesses of being motivated by "fear of a multiracial and multicultural democracy" and claimed they want to return to "1950s America."
This is the same tired playbook the Left uses whenever they can’t defend their policies on the merits.
Anyone who opposes racial quotas or gender preferences must be a racist or bigot.

What made Simon’s outburst particularly revealing was her attempt to police speech in an official government proceeding.
She wasn’t just disagreeing with the witnesses – she was trying to dictate what they could and couldn’t say.
This is exactly the kind of authoritarian behavior that Americans rejected when they elected Donald Trump and gave Republicans control of Congress.
The witnesses she attacked were testifying about the documented problems with DEI programs in federal agencies and educational institutions.
These are serious policy issues that deserve thoughtful discussion, not personal attacks and attempts at censorship.
Simon’s behavior shows why so many Americans have lost faith in Democrat politicians.
