On many days, it feels like it’s impossible to escape the intersection of sports and politics.
Every athlete, coach, and sportswriter goes out of their way to inject their Trump hatred into the discussion surrounding what happened on the field of play.
And now a Hall of Fame football coach made this jaw-dropping admission about Donald Trump.
Not every participant in sports is a dyed-in-the-wool Trump hater.
Former national champion college football coach Lou Holtz is as strong a Trump supporter as there is.
And on Thursday, President Trump honored Lou Holtz with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
In the Oval Office ceremony, the 81-year-old Holtz admitted that Donald Trump was the greatest President of his lifetime – and that included Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Reagan.
“I want to assure you how proud I am, not only to receive the award. I’m even prouder to receive it from President Donald Trump, who I think was the greatest president during my lifetime,” Holtz declared.
Trump repaid the compliment praising Holtz’s coaching prowess where he won 200 games at William and Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, and South Carolina.
“He’s one of the greatest titans in American football history,” Trump added stating that “wherever Lou went, football greatness followed.”
Holtz is best known for his tenure at Notre Dame where he won 95 games and the school’s 11th – and so far last – National Championship following a perfect 12-0 season in 1988.
Holtz restored Notre Dame to glory after five struggling seasons under former legendary high school football coach Gerry Faust.
But Holtz also admitted that all his success on the football field and the award from President Trump would not define his life.
Holtz stated that his family was his legacy.
“This award, as great as it is, does not define who Lou Holtz is,” Holtz continued. “My beautiful family, my precious wife, my friends, you have determined who I am.”
