Democrats aren’t the only politicos who would like to put Donald Trump away for years.
Plenty of establishment Republicans are secretly in favor of the lawfare being waged against Trump ahead of the 2024 election.
During his few years in the political sphere, Donald Trump has discovered several fair-weather friends who couldn’t abandon him fast enough when the going got rough.
The most notorious may be Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
Trump’s endorsement in the 2018 Republican Primary pushed Kemp over the top when it came to winning his party nomination.
As President at the time, Trump went on to campaign for Kemp, helping him win against Stacey Abrams in his governor’s race that fall.
Trump’s deep involvement in Georgia and success stumping for Kemp helps explain why Trump was so shocked to lose the state by a single vote in 2020.
But while Trump wanted to contest the result, Kemp went ahead and certified Georgia’s election results.
Trump responded by recruiting former Senator David Perdue to Primary Kemp—an effort that failed in the end.
Now with Fulton County’s Democrat District Attorney using a more than questionable approach to indict Trump on some wild charges in an obvious politicized attack, some Georgia Republicans are gearing up to fight back.
State Senator Colton Moore took the lead, calling on Governor Kemp to initiate a special session of the legislature so the state’s GOP majority has a chance to investigate and impeach Willis.
“As a Georgia State Senator, I am officially calling for an emergency session to review the actions of Fani Willis,” Moore announced. “America is under attack. I’m not going to sit back and watch as radical left prosecutors weaponize their elected offices to politically target their opponents.”
Trump thanked Moore for his effort.
“Highly respected Georgia State Senator Colton Moore deserves the thanks & congratulations of everyone for having the courage & conviction to fight the Radical Left Lunatics who are so badly hurting the Great State of Georgia, & the USA itself,” Trump declared.
But Kemp has made it clear he wants a different Republican nominee on the ballot in 2024 and refused to take his opportunity to hold Willis accountable for exploiting her office for political purposes.
“Now, my concerns with the Fulton County District Attorney’s handling of this case in the special purpose grand jury have been well-documented,” Kemp claimed. “We are now seeing what happens when prosecutors move forward with highly charged indictments and trials in the middle of an election. Simply put, it sows distrust and provides easy pickings for those who see the district attorney’s action as guided by politics.”
Kemp argued that Willis made no overtly political or unethical moves that would warrant her removal under a new Georgia law.
“But let me be clear. We have a law in the state of Georgia that clearly outlines the legal steps that can be taken if constituents believe their local prosecutors are violating their oath by engaging in unethical or illegal behavior. Up to this point, I have not seen any evidence that D.A. Willis’ actions or lack thereof, warrant action by the prosecuting attorney oversight commission,” Kemp noted.
Of course, that interpretation of events required that Kemp overlook the fact that Willis attended a fundraiser for a Democrat challenger running for Lt. Governor, a conflict of interest since that candidate was being investigated in the District Attorney’s case against Trump.
Willis also forced Trump to take a mugshot along with scheduling the trial a day before the Super Tuesday Primaries.
Yet, Kemp maintained that Willis didn’t do anything unethical.
“The bottom line is that in the state of Georgia, as long as I’m Governor, we’re going to follow the law in the Constitution regardless of who it helps or harms politically,” Kemp swore. “And in Georgia, we will not be engaging in political theater that only inflames the emotions of the moment.”
During “The Gathering,” an event hosted by Erick Erikson (a center Right pundit), Kemp announced that any Republican nominee needs to be focused on the future and ignore the past—something Trump can’t possibly do when he’s being constantly attacked with accusations stemming from his beliefs about the 2020 election.
And now it appears that Kemp is stepping up his opposition to Donald Trump to include supporting Democrats as they wage lawfare against the former president.
