Texas Democrats have become experts at embarrassing themselves.
Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett usually dominates the headlines with her outrageous behavior and ridiculous antics.
But another Texas Democrat just stole the spotlight with an arrest that has her party scrambling for damage control.
Video captures Democrat official entering stranger's vehicle
Dr. Carla Wyatt made history in 2022 when she became the first African American elected as Harris County Treasurer in Texas.
She told local media she wanted to be "a role model for those people who are coming behind me."¹
That role model image came crashing down Saturday when Houston police arrested Wyatt and charged her with burglary of a motor vehicle.
Security video caught Wyatt opening an unlocked minivan in a parking lot along Washington Avenue and entering the vehicle.²
When officers arrived on scene, they found Wyatt taking items from the car.
Wyatt told police she had permission to be inside the vehicle.
The vehicle's owner told investigators a completely different story — she didn't know Wyatt and never gave her permission to access the car.³
Police arrested Wyatt on the spot and took her into custody.
She posted a $100 bond and was released Sunday.
Wyatt is scheduled to appear in Harris County criminal court today.
The Harris County District Attorney's office issued a carefully worded statement that reads like damage control for a Democrat official caught breaking the law.
"We are aware that Carla Wyatt was arrested and charged with burglary of a motor vehicle," prosecutors told ABC 13. "As this case is pending, our office will not comment further on the details of the investigation."⁴
Pattern of lawbreaking from elected Democrat official
This isn't Wyatt's first dance with law enforcement.
In December 2023, police arrested Wyatt for driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol level of at least .15 — nearly twice the legal limit.⁵
But it gets worse.
Wyatt sat on the Harris County Bail Bond Board while she was out on bond for her DWI charge.
The Bail Bond Board oversees rules and regulations for issuing bonds in Harris County.
While serving in that role, Wyatt violated the terms of her own bond not once, but twice.
In January 2024, she failed to install a court-ordered ignition interlock device in her car.⁶
These devices require drivers to blow into a breathalyzer before the vehicle will start.
After finally installing the device in March 2024, Wyatt blew a .092 reading at 7 a.m. — above the legal limit to drive.⁷
Despite these multiple violations, the DWI charge was dropped in August after Wyatt completed a pretrial diversion program.
The chairman of the Bail Bond Board admitted he couldn't remove Wyatt from her position even if he wanted to.
"Even if she was charged with murder and violated her bond conditions, we still couldn't do anything," Chairman Troy McKinney told the Houston Chronicle.⁸
Wyatt has served as Harris County Treasurer since January 2023.
The office serves as chief custodian of all Harris County funds.
Harris County officials say they have no oversight over the treasurer because it's an independently elected position.
Translation: voters are stuck with Wyatt until her term ends in 2027 — unless she faces criminal conviction that forces her from office.
Democrats spent years lecturing Americans about accountability, the rule of law, and setting proper examples in public service.
Now one of their own sits in handcuffs after allegedly breaking into someone's car while already skating on multiple bond violations from driving drunk.
The "role model" Wyatt promised to be turned out to be a cautionary tale about Democrat hypocrisy instead.
