Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s star continues to rise within the Democrat Party.
But it could come to one abrupt end as things turn nasty with this rival.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hoped this proves the knockout blow to her top party rival.
AOC dominates Schumer by massive margin in shocking new poll
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing a potential career-ending threat from within his own state.
A bombshell new Data for Progress poll released on April 4 revealed that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez led Schumer by a whopping 19 points in a hypothetical matchup of the 2028 New York Senate primary.
NBC News reported on March 20 that Democrats have been privately and publicly urging Ocasio-Cortez to challenge Schumer if he seeks reelection in 2028.
The progressive congresswoman has remained strategically silent about her plans, but the writing on the wall couldn’t be clearer for Schumer.
Schumer’s popularity crashes as voters turn against him
This potential primary challenge couldn’t come at a worse time for the New York Democrat.
A devastating new survey from The Economist/YouGov reveals that a mere 23% of voters hold a favorable view of Schumer.
Meanwhile, a crushing 51% of Americans view him unfavorably, according to the poll conducted from April 13 to 15.
Schumer’s approval has been in freefall since January, when his favorability among voters was 30% while 41% of respondents said they viewed him unfavorably, according to a January Economist/YouGov poll.
Democrats scrambling for new leadership as Schumer falters
Several prominent Democrats have publicly called for Schumer to step down from his leadership position in recent weeks.
Democratic Maryland Representative Glenn Ivey and Democratic Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow are among those who have demanded Schumer’s resignation.
Left-wing youth activist organizations have also joined the growing chorus calling for Schumer to be replaced.
The rebellion against Schumer’s leadership exploded after he helped advance a GOP spending bill backed by President Donald Trump in March, enraging the progressive wing of his party.
The AOC revolution signals a party struggling with its identity
Ocasio-Cortez’s potential challenge to Schumer represents more than just a New York power struggle.
It signals a deeper crisis within the Democratic Party as it struggles to reconnect with American voters after devastating losses in the 2024 election cycle.
The Democratic Party itself has record-low favorability, with the party receiving just a 29% favorability rating, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS released March 16.
Even the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has acknowledged the party’s disconnect from everyday Americans.
DNC Chairman Ken Martin admitted in a February 18 memo that Americans now view Republicans as “the party of the working class and Democrats as the party of the elites.”
Schumer’s office declined to comment when contacted by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
For Schumer, the choice is increasingly clear – adapt to the new progressive wave led by figures like AOC or be swept aside as the party searches for a fresh direction and leadership.
