Manhattan Democrat District Attorney Alvin Bragg wants nothing more than to make a big splash and ensure former President Donald Trump doesn’t get elected again.
As such, like every other Democrat prosecutor targeting the former President, Bragg is bending over backwards to try Trump for allegedly falsifying business records to conceal a payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in order to keep an affair secret.
Bragg had circled March 23, 2024 as the perfect date, right in the middle of the Republican Presidential Primary, to put the former President on trial.
But federal Judge Tanya Chutkan, an Obama appointee, recently threw a wrench in the Manhattan Democrat District Attorney’s plans, setting a date of March 4, 2024 for the trial related to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s indictment against Trump for questioning the 2020 Presidential election results to begin.
Considering the fact that the federal judge has set that March 4 of next year date likely means that Bragg’s case in New York state court will be forced to reschedule, as the federal court takes priority.
Nevertheless, regardless of whether Trump’s Manhattan trial is pushed to later in the year, Democrats are still accomplishing their apparent goal if it was timing Trump’s trials such that they can keep them front and center throughout 2024.
After all, March 4 is exactly one day before the important Super Tuesday primaries, meaning Trump will likely be in a federal courtroom as voters head to the polls in 15 states.
Of course, as far as Judge Chutkan is concerned, the date of the trial is entirely coincidental, as she countered the Trump legal team’s argument for moving the date of the trial by claiming that she was simply treating Trump as she would anyone else.
“If this case involved a professional athlete, it would be inappropriate to schedule a trial to accommodate her schedule,” Chutkan claimed. “Mr. Trump will be treated with no more or less deference than any other defendant.”
But she also chose the date of the trial, despite the fact that Special Counsel Smith asked for the trial to begin on January 2 next year and Trump’s legal team requested it wait until April.
It’s not like March 4 splits the difference between the two requested dates.
Critics suggest that she had to actively think about when to hold the trial, despite her assertion that she intentionally chose the day before Super Tuesday out of “fairness.”
Interestingly though, Chutkan also essentially admitted that she wasn’t actually concerned about the “fairness” of the trial when she rejected the Trump legal team’s argument that holding the trial so soon violated the former President’s right to prepare an adequate defense and receive a fair trial by admitting that she could find no example of the government going to trial against a defendant just seven months after bringing charges against them.
“Mr. Trump is not above the law, but he is not below the law,” Trump attorney John Lauro argued. “This man’s liberty and life is at stake, and he deserves an adequate representation.”
The Obama appointee even went so far as to claim that because Trump has more money than most other defendants, it’s actually fair to treat him differently than others.
“Let’s take the temperature down,” Chutkan scolded. “I understand that you have a sacred job, but let’s not overlook the fact that Mr. Trump has considerable resources that not every defendant has.”
For his part, Trump took to TruthSocial to blast the decision and declared that he will appeal.
“Deranged Jack Smith & his team of Thugs, who were caught going to the White House just prior to Indicting the 45th President of the United States (an absolute No No!), have been working on this Witch Hunt for almost 3 years but decided to bring it smack in the middle of Crooked Joe Biden’s Political Opponent’s campaign against him,” Trump wrote. “Election Interference! Today a biased, Trump-hating Judge gave me only a two-month extension, just what our corrupt government wanted, SUPER TUESDAY. I will APPEAL!”
Democrats will stop at nothing to stack the deck against former President Donald Trump.
