It was more bad news for Democrats.
And it struck when they believed they had won a big victory.
But one of Chuck Schumer’s biggest gaffes got captured in a single frame.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell gave in to the Democrats’ requests for a quick debt limit hike without reconciliation.
In a Senate floor address, Chuck Schumer bragged about McConnell running up the white flag yet again.
“I thank my Democratic colleagues for showing unity in solving this Republican-manufactured crisis,” Schumer gloated. “Despite immense opposition from Leader McConnell and members of his conference, our caucus held together and we have pulled our country back from the cliff’s edge that Republicans tried to push us over.”
After the speech, Manchin profanely criticized Schumer’s tone in front of him.
“Manchin told Schumer the speech was ‘f*cking stupid,’ according to four sources,” Punchbowl News reported. “Then Manchin complained to reporters too. The incident doesn’t really signify anything, except to show how tense everyone is in the Senate these days. And it’s only going to get worse.”
Mr. Schumer can’t afford an enraged Joe Manchin.
Democrats still want to push Republicans into voting on a long-term debt limit raise.
Chuck Schumer and the Democrats’ sole leverage is the prospect of blowing up the Senate filibuster.
Without Joe Manchin, Schumer’s vow to end the filibuster is completely hollow.
Manchin showing his ire at Schumer’s gloating over a temporary victory means it’s even less likely that Manchin will give up on his opposition to destroying the filibuster.
And that means Democrats may be forced to use reconciliation to raise the debt ceiling long-term to pay for their socialism schemes and go on-record with just how much that would add to the national debt.
