Even though they have full control of the Federal Government, the Democrats have made several mistakes during their first month in power.
It’s been one mess of mistakes after another.
And now Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are scrambling after suffering another humiliating defeat.
Raising the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to a whopping $15 an hour is one of the top priorities for Democrats this year.
But since raising the minimum wage as a stand-alone bill would require 60 votes to break a Republican filibuster, Democrats tried to sneak the wage hike into the $2 trillion bailout bill they are ramming through Congress using the budget reconciliation process, which only requires a simple majority to pass a bill instead of the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster.
However, the Senate “Byrd Rule” says that any bill passed using the budget reconciliation process must pertain solely to budgetary matters on taxes and spending.
And the Senate Parliamentarian just delivered Chuck Schumer a humiliating defeat by ruling that the minimum wage hike violates the “Byrd Rule” and must be removed from the spending bill.
But Chuck Schumer and the Democrats aren’t giving up their push to hike the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
“We are not going to give up the fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 to help millions of struggling American workers and their families,” Schumer declared. “The American people deserve it, and we are committed to making it a reality.”
Of course, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would destroy jobs and cripple our already-struggling economy.
In fact, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would kill nearly 1.5 million jobs – which is more than the number of Americans currently making minimum wage.
But since Joe Biden made raising the minimum wage a centerpiece of his administration, Democrats are scrambling to find another way around passing it without needing 60 votes to break a filibuster.
