Discovery Channel Star Killed Cellmate Just Weeks Before Walking Free

Reality TV stardom came crashing down in the most brutal way imaginable for one Discovery Channel personality.

Chad Ollinger spent years hunting treasure and paranormal mysteries on camera.

But Discovery Channel star Chad Ollinger killed his cellmate just weeks before walking free.

Reality TV Fame Turns Into Nightmare Behind Bars

Chad Aaron Ollinger, the 41-year-old star of Discovery Channel's Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch, beat his cellmate to death inside a Las Vegas jail on December 26.

The victim, 42-year-old Christopher Kelly, was found lying motionless around 11:20 p.m. when corrections officers conducted routine checks at the Clark County Detention Center.¹

Officers immediately entered the cell and discovered Kelly suffering from apparent blunt force injuries.

Despite frantic attempts to save him, Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Section determined that a violent physical altercation occurred between Ollinger and Kelly inside their shared cell.²

Ollinger was rebooked on an open murder charge — meaning prosecutors will decide later whether to pursue first-degree or second-degree murder.

The reality star had been scheduled for release on January 12, just weeks away after serving time for contempt of court.

Instead, he's now facing a potential life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Ollinger's Legal Troubles Started Piling Up Fast

Things started going sideways for Ollinger last year.

November 2024, Amarillo, Texas — Ollinger blew through a stop light on his black Harley right in front of an unmarked police car.³

Cops hit the lights. Ollinger didn't stop. He gunned it through the city streets with police chasing behind him.

He eventually ditched the motorcycle and fled on foot before officers caught up and arrested him.

A grand jury indicted Ollinger on charges of evading arrest with a vehicle and evading arrest on foot in January 2025.

Just one month later in February, Ollinger was arrested again in Gray County, Texas for driving with an invalid license.

Things got even stranger in July when Ollinger's family reported him missing in New Mexico.

He was entered into the National Crime Information Center as a missing person but was located shortly after in Albuquerque.

On October 27, Nevada authorities arrested Ollinger after identifying him as a fugitive from another state wanted for contempt of court.

He refused to be taken to court on October 30 and refused extradition on November 3, according to Clark County court records.⁴

On December 18, Ollinger was sentenced on the contempt charge with a release date set for January 12 — what should have been the end of a relatively minor jail stay.

Instead, that short sentence turned into a potential life behind bars after Kelly's death eight days later.

Hollywood Dreams End In Prison Violence

The son of Blind Frog Ranch owner Duane Ollinger, Chad appeared in nearly all 40 episodes across five seasons of the Discovery Channel series.

The show follows the father-son duo as they hunt for an estimated $3 billion in lost Aztec gold and other treasures supposedly hidden in extensive underground caverns on the Utah property.⁵

The dreadlocked reality star became known for wearing a distinctive red and black checkered shirt on the show while serving as the resident risk-taker.

He took on the program's most dangerous assignments — diving into flooded underground passages, navigating cramped cave systems, and confronting trespassers on the property.

That adventurous spirit apparently didn't translate well to surviving incarceration.

On Tuesday, Ollinger appeared briefly in Justice Court for his initial appearance on the murder charge.

"Your attorney has some concerns about your mental health," Justice of the Peace Eric Goodman told Ollinger during the hearing. "They want you to go up and talk to the doctors."⁶

Public defender Sophie Salcedo requested a competency evaluation for her client.

Ollinger is now scheduled to appear in District Court in January for competency proceedings.

He remains held without bail in the same detention center where he allegedly killed Kelly.

The fact that Ollinger was just weeks away from release makes this case particularly tragic.

Short-term inmates facing imminent release typically try to avoid trouble and coast through their final days.

Something went catastrophically wrong in that cell on December 26.

Whether it was a dispute over stolen commissary items, perceived disrespect, gang affiliations, or mental health issues won't be known until the trial.

What is clear is that correctional officers conducting "routine checks" discovered the aftermath too late to save Kelly.

The competency evaluation request from Ollinger's attorney raises questions about whether he was mentally fit to be housed in general population.

Ollinger went from reality TV star hunting for treasure to accused killer facing life in prison over the span of just 14 months.

His father now faces the prospect of continuing Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch without his son — assuming Discovery even renews the show after this scandal.

And Kelly's family lost a loved one in a jail cell two days after Christmas.
