Despite the fact that Ron DeSantis has yet to enter the race for President there’s no denying the fact that he and Donald Trump are the only real contenders for the Republican nomination.
And although his support in polls slightly increased following his indictment on 34 felonies things haven’t exactly gone smoothly for the former President.
But now Donald Trump finally received some good news with this boost in Ron DeSantis’ backyard.
Roughly nine months out from the first nominating contest of the 2024 Republican Presidential Primary, the Iowa Caucuses, the election cycle is still in its infancy.
Nevertheless, it’s certainly been a rather wild, and certainly unprecedented, Presidential election thus far, as former President Donald Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis – the two undisputed Republican frontrunners – position themselves for the race.
With all of the hoopla, many Republican voters, as well as many Republican politicians and other notable endorsers of Presidential candidates, wait to see how things play out before truly making a decision on which way they’ll go.
But many voters and endorsers haven’t allowed the uncertainty of the Republican Primary to stop them from declaring their allegiances early.
When it comes to Trump, his list of endorsements looks almost identical to those he previously received, including the likes of Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), and J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Elise Stefanik (R-NY), amongst others.
Meanwhile, despite not officially entering the race yet, Governor DeSantis has picked up endorsements from Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Chip Roy (R-TX), rapper Azealia Banks, Fox Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch, Fox News Chairman Lachlan Murdoch, and billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, who relocated his multi-billion dollar company and millionaire employees to Florida from Chicago during the pandemic because of the Governor.
Obviously, neither Trump nor DeSantis will have any issues rallying support behind their candidacies – but they’ll also be battling for many of the same endorsements.
That’s particularly true when it comes to endorsers from Florida, as it’s obviously Governor DeSantis’ backyard, but also Trump’s home base as well, and possibly the former President’s strongest state throughout the past seven years.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) kicked things off with his endorsement of Trump months ago, but that was never really a surprise – the Congressman has been a long supporter of both candidates, and believes Trump should run in 2024 to complete his second term followed by DeSantis for eight years beginning in 2028.
Now, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) has also thrown his support behind Trump.
Of course, Donalds’ endorsement really isn’t that big of a surprise either – both he and Gaetz made their names as unwavering Trump supporters, and going back on that now would likely be political suicide.
Nevertheless, it will give the former President a slight boost in the Sunshine State.
“There is only one leader at this time in our nation’s history who can seize this moment and deliver what we need — to get us back on track, provide strength and resolve, and Make America Great Again,” Donalds said in his endorsement.
“That is why I’m honored to endorse President Donald Trump for President in 2024, and I ask my fellow Americans to join me,” he added.
Since his indictment, polls have indicated that Trump has seen a slight bump in his support amongst likely Republican Primary voters.
But with Democrats now pushing the pedal to the metal with their numerous witch hunts in order to accelerate their efforts to get him out of the race, there’s no doubt that the road ahead for the former President is going to be a bigger challenge to his staying power than any he’s faced thus far.
And only time will tell how this all ends.
