The billionaire entrepreneur has been digging into the federal government’s bloated bureaucracy and finding disturbing patterns of waste and fraud.

Social Security fraud uncovered by the Department of Government Efficiency
Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have been meticulously examining fraud in the federal government’s sprawling budget.
Democrats and their media allies have mocked DOGE’s efforts and downplayed the existence of fraud in government programs.
Social Security pays out more than $1 trillion every year in benefits, making it a lucrative target for scammers despite the false claims from Democrats that the program is free from abuse.
Musk revealed during a telephone town hall in Wisconsin that DOGE discovered someone who stole 400,000 Social Security numbers and sold them to fraudsters.
A caller asked him if Attorney General Pam Bondi would investigate Social Security fraud, and Musk dropped a bombshell.
“I believe someone is going to be arrested tomorrow because there’s someone who actually stole 400,000 Social Security numbers and personal information from the Social Security database,” Musk said.
The stolen numbers and information were being used “in order for people to basically steal money from Social Security,” he explained.
Democrats panicking over Musk’s investigations
A Social Security number has become the federal government’s primary way of identifying citizens, giving it outsized importance in our system.
Musk warned that illegal aliens were using stolen Social Security numbers to game the system and potentially commit voter fraud.
“A particular avenue of fraud for like illegal immigrants and for voter fraud, because the main way that identification is established in the United States is via Social Security,” Musk explained. “So, if you compromise a Social Security system, you can basically get people to get de facto registered to vote, even if they’re not citizens, and to get a bunch of benefits.”
The Tesla CEO told Fox News host Bret Baier in an interview that Social Security is particularly prone to fraud due to outdated systems and lax security measures.
DOGE has been trying to reform the phone system for Social Security, which has been a jackpot for scammers who can easily manipulate the current setup.
The media has treated this effort as an attack on seniors, claiming that changes will leave elderly Americans unable to get answers about their benefits.
Musk fired back at these false characterizations with the truth about what’s really happening.
“They steal people’s Social Security, is what happens,” Musk stated. “They call in, they claim to be a retiree, and they convince the Social Security person on the phone to change where the money is flowing. It actually goes to some fraudster. This is happening all day, every day. And then somebody doesn’t receive their Social Security, it’s because of all the fraud loopholes in the Social Security system.”
DOGE engineer Aram Moghaddassi revealed the staggering number of calls to Social Security attempting to commit fraud.
“At Social Security, one of the first things that we learned is that they get phone calls every day of people trying to change direct deposit information,” Moghaddassi said. “So when you want to change your bank account, you can call Social Security. We learned 40% of the calls that they get are from fraudsters.”
The 40% figure represents a shocking level of attempted fraud that has been ignored or covered up by Democrat officials who previously oversaw the program.
Democrats try to stop anti-fraud efforts
What’s particularly telling is how Democrats are reacting to these revelations with panic rather than support for rooting out criminal activity.
Instead of working with Musk and DOGE to strengthen the integrity of Social Security, Democrats are trying to block their efforts at every turn.
Left-wing media outlets have downplayed the significance of these findings or ignored them entirely, focusing instead on criticizing Musk personally.
The Social Security fraud investigation comes as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to root out waste, fraud, and abuse across government programs.
By some estimates, fraud in government benefits programs costs taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars annually – money that could be used to strengthen programs for legitimate recipients.
