President Trump’s most controversial advisor is taking a step back.
The Left is already claiming victory, but it may not be all they think.
And Elon Musk walked away from the White House after this shocking scene played out.
Wisconsin election defeat triggers Musk’s retreat from public service
The fake news media and Democrat Party have spent months turning Elon Musk into their favorite political villain.
As co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk has been a wrecking ball to the bloated federal bureaucracy that Democrats have built over decades.
His aggressive cuts to government agencies and mass layoffs sent shockwaves through Washington’s establishment and threatened the Left’s taxpayer-funded power structure.
But Democrats found reason to celebrate after leftist Susan Crawford defeated conservative Brad Schimel by a stunning 10-point margin in Wisconsin’s State Supreme Court election.
Musk had poured $20 million into supporting Schimel and even campaigned in person for the conservative candidate.
The lopsided defeat gave the media and Democrats exactly what they wanted – a chance to frame the election as a referendum on Elon Musk himself.
Less than 24 hours after the Wisconsin results came in, POLITICO’s Rachael Blade reported that Musk was making his exit from the administration.
“Trump remains pleased w/ Musk & DOGE, but both men have decided in recent days that it will soon be time for Musk to return to his businesses and take on a supporting role,” Blade wrote on X.
According to Blade’s reporting, Musk’s retreat from the spotlight comes as some within the Trump administration have grown concerned about his unpredictability.
“Musk’s looming exit comes as some Trump administration insiders & many outside allies have become frustrated with his unpredictability & view the billionaire as a political liability, a dynamic that was thrown into stark relief Tuesday when a conservative judge Musk vocally supported lost his bid for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat by 10 points,” Blade added.
White House denies pushing Musk out
Despite the timing, the White House pushed back hard against suggestions that President Trump was distancing himself from Musk.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blasted POLITICO’s reporting, calling it “garbage” in a fiery post on X.
“This ‘scoop’ is garbage. Elon Musk and President Trump have both publicly stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete,” Leavitt wrote.

The reality is that Musk’s official role in the administration always had an expiration date. As a “special government employee,” Musk was temporarily exempt from certain ethics and conflict-of-interest rules – but that status only lasts for 130 days.
According to Blade’s reporting, that period is “expected to expire in late May or early June.”
Musk will remain in Trump’s orbit
While the billionaire entrepreneur may be stepping back from his formal government position, sources indicate he isn’t disappearing from Trump’s world entirely.
“Senior administration officials said Musk is likely to retain an informal role as an adviser & continue to be an occasional face around the White House grounds. Another cautioned that anyone who thinks Musk is going to disappear entirely from Trump’s orbit is ‘fooling themselves,'” Blade reported.
The timing of Musk’s departure has nevertheless given Democrats and the media precisely what they wanted – the appearance of claiming a scalp from the Trump administration.
For months, they’ve worked to demonize Musk and turn public opinion against him. The Wisconsin election results and his subsequent exit from his official role have handed them a narrative they’re eager to promote.
But those celebrating Musk’s departure may be doing so prematurely. His influence on the Trump administration isn’t likely to vanish – it’s just shifting to a less public role that might actually make him more effective behind the scenes.
The Left’s determination to paint this as a victory reveals just how threatened they feel by Musk’s mission to dismantle the bureaucratic empire they’ve spent decades building.
