House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is hoping the Black Live Matter movement delivers a major victory for Democrats in November.
But appeasing the angry mob is causing Pelosi to make unforced errors that could cost her the House majority.
And Pelosi left jaws on the floor when she used this one word to describe police.
One of the key issues that both his executive order and legislative proposals have focused on is the use of chokeholds.
After the death of George Floyd, banning the use of chokeholds became a rallying cry for reformers.
Senate Republicans led by Tim Scott (SC) are expected to introduce legislation this week that also significantly curtails the use of chokeholds.
In the meantime, President Trump has taken swift executive action to enact police reform nationwide.
Additionally, President Trump is expected to sign an executive order that will instruct the Justice Department to identify groups to provide accreditation to local police departments on de-escalation tactics that would be contingent on banning the chokehold unless an officer’s life was in danger.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went on CNN and acknowledged Republicans were working to ban the use of chokeholds.
But in the middle of her rant, she claimed police who used chokeholds were guilty of “lynching.”
“I can’t imagine they wouldn’t have a ban on chokeholds. Let’s get reasonable. A chokehold is a lynching.
That’s strangulation. It’s a lynching. I think that is almost like the lowest common denominator, but again I will leave it up to my negotiators, because as you know in a negotiation, it’s not what’s in or out, it’s the sum total of the different impact that the legislation will have in justice and policing,” Pelosi rambled.
“I think that the legislation for my members, from what I have heard them say, does it have a chokehold ban? That’s one of the basic questions that people ask. Look at what we’re talking about here. People who have been so — just had such injustice in terms of policing and the lives of so many people in our country. Let’s do the best we can, not the minimum that we can in this. This is about justice. It’s about redressing past grievances. It’s about, let’s see what we can do. I mean, chokeholds? Am I missing something here?” Pelosi added.
Pelosi describing chokeholds as “lynching” is sure to fuel the already heated rhetoric and passions of the mobs carrying out acts of violence and promoting anarchy in American cities.
Speaker Pelosi knows these folks are calling for defunding police departments nationwide.
And comparing the actions of some police officers to that of lynch mobs during the era of Jim Crow will only make things worse.
