Democrats may have assumed House Republicans’ investigations into Hunter Biden could be easily stonewalled.
But the Biden family is coming to the realization that that won’t be a walk in the park.
Now that Republicans have the majority in the U.S. House, the House Oversight Committee – led by Rep. James Comer (R-KY) – is well into the process of investigating the alleged influence peddling scheme Hunter Biden ran in order to profit from selling access to his then-Vice President father to foreign nations, like China, Ukraine, and Russia.
The primary question the Oversight Committee’s investigation is seeking to answer is whether or not such an influence peddling scheme – which saw both Hunter and the President’s brother, James Biden, receive tens of millions of dollars from the aforementioned foreign powers – also compromised Joe Biden.
Based on events that have been unfolding in Ukraine, Russia, and China over the past two years, that’s obviously an especially pertinent question.
“If President Biden is compromised by deals with foreign adversaries and they are impacting his decision making, this is a threat to national security,” Comer previously stated.
As part of the Committee’s investigation, Rep. Comer recently sent letters to Hunter, James, and Biden family business associate Eric Schwerin demanding that they immediately turn over documents related to their deals with companies connected to Communist China.
“The American people deserve transparency and accountability about the Biden family’s influence peddling,” Comer wrote. “The Oversight Committee is committed to exposing the waste, fraud and abuse that has taken place at the highest levels of our government. Hunter Biden, James Biden and Eric Schwerin’s documents, records and communications are critical to this investigation.”
At the center of Hunter Biden’s alleged influence-peddling scheme was Patrick Ho, a Chinese businessman who was convicted in 2017 for an audacious plot to dole out millions in bribes to African leaders in order to secure energy contracts for CEFC China Energy.
CEFC China Energy also just happens to be a company that Hunter and James Biden did millions of dollars of “business” with.
Outside of his connections to the Bidens, Communist China, and CEFC, Ho also has connections to U.N. General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic, who was the middleman that connected the Biden family with Ho in order to complete their CFEC deal, according to emails recovered from Hunter’s infamous “laptop from hell.”
“I would like to invite Hunter to join me at this private dinner (small dinner — this is not an event of any kind),” Jeremic wrote in the email. “I am confident that many interesting projects may come out of that in the future.”
And that tangled web of alleged corruption has led Rep. Comer to name Jeremic as a “key witness,” and demanded that he turn over “all documents and communications” relating to Hunter and James Biden, Patrick Ho, Schwerin, and others.
“Mr. Jeremic’s previous testimony regarding business relationships with officials who participated in international bribery schemes raises red flags that there may be evidence showing the Biden family and associates peddled influence and attempted to sell access, including to individuals connected to the Chinese Communist Party,” Comer explained.
But to date, Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abe Lowell, has refused to cooperate with the Oversight Committee’s investigation, claiming that the Committee “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose and oversight basis for requesting such records from Mr. Biden, who is a private citizen.”
How exactly the House Oversight Committee can lack both an oversight basis or legislative purpose, no one knows, but that’s Hunter Biden’s official stance at this point.
Now, though, the Committee’s patience with Biden’s stonewalling their investigation is running thin.
In fact, Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) recently told Fox News that the Oversight Committee is nearing the point of deploying a “last resort” – outright subpoenaing Hunter Biden to testify under oath.
“I think we’re really close to it frankly,” Fallon proclaimed.
After Republicans reclaimed the House majority and engaged in a days-long battle over which of them would be the new Speaker, few could have guessed that they’d actually be able to advance the Biden family corruption investigation so quickly.
Besides, Republicans do have a long, documented history of making all sorts of promises about cleaning things up in Washington, D.C. only to drop the ball virtually every single time.
But now, they’ve already reached the point in their investigation in which they’re ready to begin issuing subpoenas to get to the truth.
And that’s undoubtedly a nightmare scenario for the Bidens.
