During a recent speech at the Islamic Circle of North America, Ilhan Omar complained about the alleged anti-Muslim bias in the American media.
“There isn’t a single Wikipedia page that you can open about a Muslim leader, in the U.S. and abroad, where you will not read something so atrocious that you do not want to associate yourself with them. It doesn’t matter which article you read about this convention, every single Muslim convention, about me, every other leader, you will be shocked to see what people are saying about us, and how we actually see ourselves,” Congresswoman Omar ranted.
According to Omar, the lack of identity politics at play in the American media is to blame for the negative coverage about Muslims.
“And I think about why that is. Because oftentimes we have allowed people to develop a narrative about who we are, what our faith stands for, and how we should show up in society. And that, I think, is injustice that we have done, to ourselves and our community and to our faith. Because, as they say, the day belongs to those who show up,” Omar added. “And if you are not, as the saying goes, many politicians use this, ‘if you are not at the table, you are on the menu.’ So when we, as Muslims, are not in those newsrooms, shaping the narrative and telling our own story of who we are, someone else is.”
Omar was blasted by her critics, who say her outrage should be aimed at radical organizations like the Islamic Circle of North America, as lawmakers in both parties have accused the group of having connections to terrorist organizations.
The Islamic Circle of North America promoted the Muslim Brotherhood and is also linked to the controversial Pakistani group, Jamaat-e-Islami.
The Muslim Brotherhood is a group that many conservatives believe should be designated as a terrorist organization.
Of course, Ilhan Omar often deflects legitimate questions about her anti-Semitic record by accusing everyone else of bigotry and racism.
And now Omar is deflecting attention away from her connections to radical organizations like the Islamic Circle of North America by deploying the race card to her critics.
