Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar set off a firestorm in Washington, D.C. about her future.
Suddenly her time in the Washington, D.C. Swamp is in doubt.
And Ilhan Omar discovered her time in the House could be finished after this shocking video leaked out.
Ilhan Omar may make a run for Senate in 2026
Minnesota Democrat Senator Tina Smith set off a shockwave in Washington, D.C. when she announced she wouldn’t be running for re-election in 2026.
“I wanted you to hear directly from me that I have decided not to run for re-election to the United States Senate in 2026,” Smith said in a video announcing she would not be seeking another term.
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton appointed Smith to the seat in 2018 to replace the disgraced Senator Al Franken.
Franken was forced to resign after radio broadcaster and model Leeann Tweeden accused Franken of unwanted kissing during a USO trip in 2006.
A picture showing Franken jokingly groping Tweeden’s breasts while she was passed out was the final straw in Franken’s brief political career.
Smith was a heavy favorite to win re-election this November as Minnesota is still a deep blue state even though Donald Trump won the highest percentage of the vote by a GOP Presidential nominee in a generation.
But Smith’s retirement announcement may put the state back in play and is an indication Democrats think they will be in the minority in the Senate until at least 2030.
Smith claimed the decision had nothing to do with politics, which of course is a dead giveaway that it had everything to do with politics.
“This decision is not political, it’s entirely personal,” Smith added. “But it’s not lost on me that our country is in need of strong progressive leadership right now, maybe more than ever.”
One candidate who could hand the seat to the GOP
Smith also praised the prospective Democrat candidates to replace her.
“We have a deep bench of political talent in Minnesota, a group of leaders that are more than ready to pick up the work and carry us forward,” Smith continued.
One of the potential Senate hopefuls is Kamala Harris’ disastrous running mate, the socially awkward Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz.
“Tim Walz is considering a Senate run & has not ruled it out, according to a person close to the Governor,” POLITICO’s Elena Schneider reported.
Usually, a sitting Governor talking about entering a Senate race will clear the field of serious challengers.
But even after the Walz news dropped, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced she was running for the Senate seat.
“I love Minnesota and my intention is to run for U.S. Senate and continue to serve the people of this state. I’ll make a formal announcement later this month. In the meantime, I’m talking with community and family and friends. I will have more to say soon,” Flanagan wrote on social media.
But there is one more wildcard in the race.
And she is a real wild card indeed. Ilhan Omar.
“Congresswoman Omar will be talking with Minnesotans about future of Tina’s senate seat and DFL party in Minnesota,” spokesman Connor McNutt told Axios.
If Flanagan and Walz both run, they could split the establishment Democrat vote, allowing Ilhan Omar to win with a plurality by cleaning up with the hard-core socialist base.
The Democrats nominating Omar would definitely put this seat in play and have Republicans popping the corks on champagne bottles from D.C. to Minneapolis.
