Media creates fake narrative about “innocent father” deported by Trump administration
The mainstream media thought they had found the perfect story to derail President Trump’s deportation program.
The Atlantic published a heart-wrenching article claiming the Trump administration had made a terrible mistake that sent an innocent Maryland father to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador due to an “administration error.”
This sob story spread like wildfire across social media and liberal news outlets, with Democrats and journalists alike rushing to condemn the administration’s deportation policies.
Attorneys for the Trump administration had acknowledged in a court filing that Kilmar Abrego Garcia was deported under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 because of an “administration error.”
The Atlantic’s article portrayed Garcia as a loving father who was on his way to pick up his son when he was wrongfully deported to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, which they described as a “third-world prison.”
Former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau dramatically escalated the rhetoric on social media, directly attacking Vice President Vance.
“You just admitted to accidentally sending an innocent father from Maryland to a torture dungeon in El Salvador. And you refuse to do anything about it,” Favreau wrote on X.
RINOs, journalists, and Democrats all jumped on the bandwagon, spreading claims that President Trump was sending law-abiding immigrants to “torture prisons” abroad.
The real story emerges about MS-13 gang member
But the entire narrative was completely false.
What The Atlantic conveniently omitted was crucial information contained in court filings that showed Garcia was far from an innocent victim.
Two separate legal proceedings had determined that Garcia was actually a member of the ultraviolent MS-13 gang and already had a removal order against him.
Garcia had claimed asylum in a desperate attempt to avoid deportation back to El Salvador, where he would face justice for his criminal activities.
When Politico reporter Kyle Cheney tried to perpetuate the false narrative by claiming a judge hadn’t actually determined Garcia was a gang member, Vice President Vance decided enough was enough.

“Kyle Cheney, a ‘legal affairs reporter,’ is apparently unable or unwilling to look at the facts here,” Vance fired back on X.
“In 2019, an Immigration Judge (under the first Trump administration) determined that the deported man was, in fact, a member of the MS-13 gang. He also apparently had multiple traffic violations for which he failed to appear in court. A real winner,” Vance continued, exposing the media’s deliberate omissions.
The Vice President didn’t stop there. He went on to call out the entire American media establishment for their coordinated effort to mislead the public.
“It is telling that the entire American media is going to run a propaganda operation today making you think an innocent ‘father of 3’ was apprehended by a gulag,” Vance explained.
He emphasized the simple facts that journalists were desperate to hide: Garcia was an illegal alien, and an immigration judge had determined he was a member of one of the most violent gangs in the Western Hemisphere.
Democrats trying to undermine popular deportation program
The media’s attempt to spin this story is no accident.
Recent polling shows that over 50% of Americans support President Trump’s plan for the mass deportation of illegal aliens. When it comes to violent criminals specifically, that support climbs even higher.
That’s precisely why Democrats and their allies in the media are resorting to emotional manipulation and outright fabrications.
By portraying violent gang members as innocent family men wrongfully targeted by the Trump administration, they hope to erode public support for desperately needed immigration enforcement.
The Garcia case perfectly illustrates the Left’s playbook: find a deportation case, strip away all context about the individual’s criminal history, present them as an innocent victim, and then use the manufactured outrage to attack the Trump administration’s policies.
But thanks to J.D. Vance’s willingness to confront these lies head-on, the truth prevailed in this instance.
The Vice President has proven once again that he won’t allow false narratives to go unchallenged, even when they come from established media outlets that are used to having their claims accepted without scrutiny.
