Yellowstone is one of the most critically acclaimed and popular shows in the history of television.

As the show nears its final season, there is still one big question that is left hanging over the series’ star.

But Costner just revealed a major update on Yellowstone’s final season that has fans buzzing.

Kevin Costner says he wants in on filming the final episodes of Yellowstone, but . . .

In his most extensive comments to date about his fate on the show, actor Kevin Costner told Entertainment Tonight that he would love to appear as John Dutton in Yellowstone’s final episodes.

“I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to . . . I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it,” Costner said.

The second half of season five is set to premiere this November but there is still an open question as to whether or not Costner’s character will appear.

The confusion is due to Costner and the studio being at an impasse over scheduling and money.

Paramount claimed Costner wanted a reduced shooting schedule to accommodate the filming of his two-movie western Horizon: An American Saga.

The first film is set to premiere on June 28 and the second is slated to hit theaters in August.

In his divorce proceedings, Costner claimed the holdup was over money as well as creative rights saying, “We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than previous seasons [and] there were issues with the creative.”

The future of Yellowstone still in flux

Costner also said he would like to have input on how his character’s arc wraps up, but that is highly unlikely as co-creator and showrunner Tyler Sheridan – like most TV producers – doesn’t believe in letting the actors dictate creative for their characters on a show.

“[Dutton] needs to be proactive in what happens and I’ve kind of had my own fantasy how [the character’s final arc] might be,” Costner added. “But that’s Taylor’s thing. I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see.”

Time may also have run out on the ability to film new scenes for Costner’s character for the final episodes of Yellowstone.

But just because Yellowstone is wrapping up without Kevin Costner doesn’t mean the franchise is finished.

Paramount announced two new spinoffs – 1944 and the Matthew McConaughey-led 2024.

2024 will continue the story of the Dutton clan in the modern day, picking up where Yellowstone left off.

Yellowstone is one of the most successful franchises in modern TV history.

There was no chance the studio was just going to let this show end because it couldn’t come to a satisfactory agreement with the original series star on money and shooting schedules.

Now fans of the show will just have to wait and see what is next for John Dutton.
