Mark Kelly made a video telling troops to disobey orders from their Commander-in-Chief.
Now he's facing the consequences and crying about it.
And Mark Kelly just doubled down on stupid after Pete Hegseth dropped the hammer.
Kelly released a video undermining military discipline
Back in November, Senator Mark Kelly joined five other Democrat lawmakers in a video that crossed a dangerous line.
The Arizona Democrat looked directly into the camera and told active-duty troops they could refuse orders from President Trump.
"Our laws are clear. You can refuse illegal orders," Kelly said in the video posted on November 18.¹
Kelly and the other Democrats — all former military or intelligence officers — claimed they were simply educating troops about the law.
But everyone knew what they were really doing.
They were giving political cover to any service member who wanted to defy Trump's lawful orders to secure the border, deploy the National Guard to crime-ridden cities, or strike drug-smuggling operations.
Kelly used his credentials as a retired Navy Captain and former NASA astronaut to add weight to his seditious message.
President Trump immediately called out what Kelly and the others had done.
"It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."²
The White House made clear that encouraging troops to refuse lawful orders undermines good order and discipline in the military.
"You can't have a functioning military if there is disorder and chaos within the ranks," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated.³
The Pentagon announced in late November it was investigating Kelly for "serious allegations of misconduct."⁴
Hegseth announced he's cutting Kelly's rank and pension
On Monday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth lowered the boom on Senator Kelly.
Hegseth announced the Pentagon is taking administrative action to reduce Kelly's retirement rank from Navy Captain and slash his military pension.
"In response to Senator Mark Kelly's seditious statements — and his pattern of reckless misconduct — the Department of War is taking administrative action against Captain Mark E. Kelly," Hegseth wrote on X.⁵
The Defense Secretary made clear this isn't just about one video.
Hegseth's formal Letter of Censure — which will permanently stain Kelly's military record — cites Kelly's "pattern of conduct" from June through December 2025.
Hegseth's censure letter accused Kelly of intentionally counseling troops to refuse lawful orders and characterizing legitimate military operations as illegal.⁶
Translation: Kelly repeatedly attacked Trump administration military operations as unlawful and encouraged troops to refuse orders.
"As a retired Navy Captain who is still receiving a military pension, Captain Kelly knows he is still accountable to military justice," Hegseth stated. "And the Department of War — and the American people — expect justice."⁷
Kelly has 30 days to respond before the Pentagon finalizes the demotion and pension cut.
Hegseth warned that Kelly's status as a sitting Senator doesn't exempt him from accountability.
"Captain Kelly's status as a sitting United States Senator does not exempt him from accountability, and further violations could result in further action," the Defense Secretary's statement concluded.⁸
Kelly is playing victim instead of taking responsibility
Rather than admit he crossed a line, Kelly is doubling down and claiming he's being persecuted.
Kelly posted on X that Hegseth's actions are designed to "intimidate me and other members of Congress from doing our jobs."
"If this is meant to intimidate me and other members of Congress from doing our jobs and holding this administration accountable, it won't work," Kelly wrote after the Pentagon's announcement.⁹
The Arizona Senator is trying to fundraise off his own misconduct.
Kelly and the other Democrats in the video have sent out fundraising emails based on Trump's reaction, filling their campaign coffers while claiming to be victims.
Kelly has even been making trips to South Carolina — an early primary state — positioning himself for a potential 2028 presidential run.¹⁰
The fraudulent moderate act is wearing thin.
Kelly loves to posture as a reasonable Democrat who works across the aisle and supports strong national defense.
But when it mattered, Kelly actively worked to undermine military discipline and encouraged insubordination in the ranks.
He weaponized his military credentials to give political cover to troops who might want to defy lawful orders from their Commander-in-Chief.
Kelly thought his status as a Senator and a war hero would protect him from consequences.
He was wrong.
The Uniform Code of Military Justice applies to retired officers who continue receiving military benefits.
Defense Secretary Hegseth is using that authority to hold Kelly accountable for conduct that brought "discredit upon the armed forces."¹¹
Kelly's tweet responding to Hegseth's announcement tells you everything you need to know about where his head is at.
Rather than show contrition or respect for the chain of command, Kelly is claiming persecution and vowing to fight "with everything I've got."
Senator Kelly wanted to play political games with military discipline.
Now he's learning that actions have consequences — even for Democrats who think they're untouchable.
