Four House Democrats just showed the world how far they’re willing to go to undermine America’s immigration laws.
And conservatives aren’t going to believe what they did next.
Maxine Dexter and fellow Democrats just embarrassed America with this disgraceful stunt in El Salvador.
Four House Democrats flew to El Salvador to advocate for a criminal illegal immigrant who was deported by the Trump administration in what was called “an administrative error.”Â
But they were denied a meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland father in question, causing them to escalate their demands to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The group included Representatives Maxine Dexter of Oregon, Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, Robert Garcia of California, and Maxwell Frost of Florida.Â
They appeared on CNN with Wolf Blitzer to complain about being denied access to Abrego Garcia.
“We know that now that, through the courts, at least the El Salvadorian government says that he is alive still,” Representative Robert Garcia admitted during their CNN appearance.
This latest development comes as the Trump administration continues its efforts to address the immigration crisis left behind by the Biden-Harris administration.
Congressman Maxwell Frost claimed the situation represents a “constitutional crisis,” suggesting President Trump is defying a Supreme Court ruling.
“The Supreme Court has handed down a decision to the Trump administration saying they must facilitate the return of Abrego Garcia, and that they have decided to completely defy that Supreme Court ruling,” Frost declared on CNN.
But the Trump administration maintains they are following legal procedures rather than defying the court.
The delegation’s journey has created a firestorm of controversy, with even prominent Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom of California criticizing their actions.
“This is the distraction of the day, the art of distraction,” Newsom said in comments that sparked tension within his own party. “It’s a tough case, because people, really, are they defending MS-13? Are they defending someone who’s out of sight, out of mind in El Salvador?”
The Governor warned that Democrats are “risking bad optics and costly distractions that benefit Republicans” by pursuing this case so aggressively.
When confronted with Newsom’s criticism, Representative Robert Garcia attempted to downplay the Governor’s remarks.
“I think the Governor has actually clarified his remarks. And he’s, in fact, said he absolutely believes and understands that this is an important case,” Garcia claimed. “He’s been a leader on immigration issues here in California. And I have spoken with him and his team.”
But Newsom’s initial reaction highlights the growing divide among Democrats regarding the party’s immigration messaging heading into 2025.
The delegation also revealed they sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio with several demands, including “regular proof of life” for Abrego Garcia, access to counsel, and facilitation of his return to the United States.
Representative Ansari used the opportunity to launch personal attacks against President Trump, comparing him to authoritarian leaders.
“Donald Trump is following the same authoritarian playbook as others around the world, including President Bukele, by trying to consolidate power by defying the Supreme Court and by just not following the law,” she claimed without evidence.
The delegation’s trip comes as the Trump administration has prioritized border security and immigration enforcement, seeking to reverse the chaos created during the Biden years when millions of illegal immigrants flooded across the southern border.
President Trump has maintained that the scale of the immigration challenge makes individual trials for each deportation case impractical.
“We would need hundreds of thousands of trials for the hundreds of thousands of illegals we are sending out of the country. Such a thing is not possible to do,” the President explained in a social media post.
Representative Maxine Dexter pushed back on this reality, insisting that “Due process is not optional. That is a must right in the United States of America.”
However, the Congresswoman failed to explain how the nation’s court system could possibly handle the massive backlog of immigration cases created during the Biden administration when border enforcement essentially collapsed.
The controversy highlights the stark contrast between the Trump administration’s focus on securing America’s borders and enforcing immigration laws versus Democrats’ apparent prioritization of illegal immigrants over American citizens.
While the delegation claimed they were representing their constituents’ concerns, the trip has raised questions about whether these members of Congress could better serve Americans by addressing issues like inflation, crime, and the economy rather than traveling to El Salvador on behalf of a deported illegal immigrant.
The Trump administration has maintained that their enforcement priorities are focused on public safety and national security, with the President repeatedly emphasizing that Americans deserve a government that puts their interests first.
