The fight against the coronavirus is moving into the next stage.
That’s leading to questions about Dr. Fauci’s role given rumors swirling of Trump shutting down the coronavirus task force.
And Mike Pence just cleared the air about Dr. Fauci’s future with the Trump administration.
Out of all the members of the White House coronavirus task force, Dr. Fauci is clearly the most controversial.
He was the leading advocate for the disastrous government-imposed lockdowns that have wreaked havoc on the economy, sending tens of millions of Americans to the unemployment line.
But with dozens of states winding down their mandatory shutdowns, the administration is re-evaluating the public role of the coronavirus task force as it shifts the focus toward reinvigorating the American economy.
And with that, Dr. Fauci’s controversial hot takes in the press may be limited going forward.
Vice President Mike Pence was the first to announce the decision to reporters at his office in the West Wing.
“I think we’re having conversations about that, and about what the proper time is for the task force to complete its work,” Pence told the press. “And for the ongoing efforts to take place on an agency by agency level.”
The Trump administration is looking to wind down the task force by Memorial Day because its primary goal of guiding America through the coronavirus crisis was safely met.
“It really is all a reflection of the tremendous progress that we’ve made as a country,” Pence added.
The Vice President added that Dr. Deborah Birx would still be advising the President and work out of the White House.
“We’re going to keep Dr. Deb Birx around every bit as long as we need to,” Pence said.
Dr. Birx told reporters her job was to continue monitoring the outbreak and provide the best medical expertise to the President daily based on the data available.
“We’ll still keep a close eye on the data,” Birx said. “Because we have very good data now, it took us a while to build that capacity and we’ll make sure that we’re watching that at a federal level.”
