Mitt Romney is one of the leaders of the Never Trump movement within the Republican Party.
Never Trumpers like Romney think grassroots conservatives only make up a small fraction of the GOP base.
But Mitt Romney immediately regretted taking the podium after receiving this unexpected reaction from the crowd.
Last weekend, the Utah Republican Party held its annual convention.
U.S. Senator Mitt Romney addressed the convention crowd, but as soon as he took the stage, the entire crowd began to boo him.
“You can boo all you like,” Romney shot back. “I’ve been a Republican all of my life. My dad was the Governor of Michigan and I was the Republican nominee for President in 2012.”
Of course, there’s a reason why the grassroots Republicans are angry at Mitt Romney.
Not only did Romney effectively work to elect Joe Biden, but he voted to impeach President Trump twice.
However, in typical establishment fashion, Romney told the crowd that they were the ones who should be embarrassed, not him.
“Aren’t you embarrassed?” Romney exclaimed. “I’m a man who says what he means, and you know I was not a fan of our last President’s character issues.”
But the crowd refused to listen to Romney, and during his speech some folks in the audience shouted “communist” and “traitor” at him to make sure he knew how they felt about him.
The way the crowd reacted to Romney over the weekend only shows that the Never Trumpers do not make up the majority of the GOP base.
Grassroots conservatives do.
And if Mitt Romney and his fellow establishment RINOs try to take over the driver’s seat of the Republican Party, the grassroots conservatives that elected Donald Trump in the first place will hit the snooze button until a true conservative takes the reigns back.
