Ron DeSantis has a massive decision to make.
Whatever he decides will likely impact the future of his career.
And Ron DeSantis just dropped one hint that has Americans gripping their seats in excitement.
Ron DeSantis keeps a future Senate tenure open to consideration
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) was one of President-elect Donald Trump’s first cabinet selections when he was offered Secretary of State upon his return to the White House.
Rubio is likely to face a simple and easy confirmation by the Senate, which will effectively open up a Senate seat in Florida.
Florida law gives their Governor, Republican Ron DeSantis, the ability to select a replacement to serve in the Senate until a special election takes place, which is set to happen in 2026.
On social media, DeSantis announced that he is already undergoing the vetting process of multiple potential candidates to sit in the vacant post.
“Senator Marco Rubio is expected to resign from the Senate to assume duties as Secretary of State when the Trump administration takes power on January 20th, creating a vacancy roughly two months from today,” read DeSantis’ post on X.
DeSantis noted that they are still gathering names, but Floridians should know who their fill-in Senator will be in January.
“We have already received strong interest from several possible candidates, and we continue to gather names of additional candidates and conduct preliminary vetting,” continued DeSantis.
“More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks, with a selection likely made by the beginning of January,” he added.

The Florida Republican Governor has ensured that whomever he appoints, it will certainly be a true conservative that wants to support the implementation of Donald Trump’s agenda.
“Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results,” concluded the Governor.
Potential new path opens for DeSantis
DeSantis took his shot at running for the Republican nomination for President this year, but fell short when he faced Trump on the ballot.
He still has the option to try running again in 2028, but most experts believe that Vice President-elect J.D. Vance will likely walk away with the nomination considering his image as Trump’s potential heir apparent.
DeSantis ran for the United States Senate briefly in 2016, when he gunned for Marco Rubio’s seat.
Ultimately, DeSantis elected to drop out, and instead ran for re-election in the House once Rubio dropped out of the Presidential race and announced he would try to retain his Senate seat instead.
But Governor DeSantis does have a major impending limitation knocking on his door – he will reach his term limit after the 2026 election.
If he decides to run for Senate, however, he would be able to keep his political career hot and it would help leave the door open for a Presidential run sometime in the 2030’s.
DeSantis also has the option of selecting a mere placeholder to keep the Senate seat warm for him to announce a run in the 2026 Senate special election.
James Uthmeier, who serves as DeSantis’ Chief of Staff, is one name up for contention alongside Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL), Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump, as well as DeSantis’ Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez.
DeSantis has kept his future open and undeclared in the meantime.
“We’ll see what the future holds,” stated DeSantis during a January 2024 radio interview with Steve Deace. “Most of the people that supported me, whether activists, whether volunteers, whether fundraisers, you know, they’re all on board, you know, for what the future holds. So, we’ll be active.”
The decision of who will fill in Marco Rubio’s Senate seat will be one of the biggest decisions Ron DeSantis has had to make during his role as the Sunshine State’s Governor.
