Conservatives are fuming after Mike Johnson followed in the footsteps of past GOP speakers including John Boehner, Paul Ryan, and Kevin McCarthy before him by using Democrat votes to pass a clean continuing resolution to fund the government.
In this case, 209 Democrats and only 127 Republicans voted for Johnson’s resolution which included government funding at levels set by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.
The continuing resolution—which will continue to pay for Democrats’ pet projects until early next year—contained no spending cuts and failed to address much needed border security policy changes.
It represented a complete and utter capitulation to Joe Biden’s socialist agenda.
That’s a wildly risky career move for Johnson considering what was being demanded when he took on the role as Speaker.
Now this move on Johnson’s part is bringing a swift close to the honeymoon phase after ousting Kevin McCarthy.
No doubt Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz is already getting worked up.
He led the rebellion against McCarthy due to how the former Speaker passed clean continuing resolutions to fund the government at spending levels set by Democrats also using a majority of Democrat votes.
Now Steve Bannon just issued a heads up that Johnson is “now on the clock.”
In a social media post Bannon warned Johnson that he has until the next funding deadline to cut spending and beef up border security as conservatives were promised when he was selected for the position.
“This was a Surrender/Cave to the UniParty—it can’t be looked @ in any different light —only win was the dropping of all the Supplemental Ukraine funding….Speaker now ‘on the clock’ with 75 Days to achieve ‘Conservative Victories,’” Bannon declared in a social media post.
Bannon then tore into Johnson borrowing another McCarthy method and attempting to cover himself by spewing right wing talking points on Fox News in an attempt to distract conservatives from focusing on the fact that he just gave Joe Biden everything he wanted in a nice tidy Christmas gift.
“You spend way too much time on Murdoch’s news,” Bannon ranted. “Murdoch’s news does not run the deal. You should understand that your predecessor was on Murdoch news all the time and you saw what happened to him.”
At this rate Johnson could make his mark as the shortest-serving Speaker in Congressional history.
