Never-Trump Senator Mitt Romney thought his base of support in Utah was rock-solid.
But since taking office he’s opposed President Trump at every turn.
And now these poll results just gave Mitt Romney the news he’d been dreading.
Despite relying on President Trump’s endorsement to secure the nomination for the U.S. Senate, RINO Senator Mitt Romney has done everything he could since to oppose Trump’s agenda, including voting for the Democrats’ partisan impeachment witch hunt.
But the attacks on President Trump haven’t played well at home with Romney’s constituents.
Voters knew Romney would chart his own course in the Senate, but voting for impeachment went further than anyone expected.
Romney tried defending his vote by claiming, “The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust. What he did was not perfect. No, it was a flagrant assault on our electoral rights, our national security, and our fundamental values.”
Much to Romney’s dismay, while he may have won over some skeptical Democrats, Republican voters back home aren’t buying his excuses.
Gallup found that 56 percent of Democrats now hold a favorable view of Mitt Romney (a far cry from when he was running against Barack Obama in 2012).
But only 23 percent of Republicans agree with them.
And those numbers just barely scratch the surface of Romney’s troubles.
While Romney’s approval rating is up 19 points with Democrats, it’s fallen 22 points with Republicans during the same time period.
Romney clearly stepped in it when he sided with Democrats in their partisan impeachment witch hunt.
And like numerous Never-Trump Senators before him, it all-but guarantees his political career is over.
Utah Republicans were livid over Romney’s betrayal of President Trump.
Utah State Rep. Tim Quinn even introduced a bill to create the process to recall a U.S. Senator, which doesn’t yet exist in the state.
While the bill hasn’t moved since its introduction, if Romney continues to alienate his base by opposing Trump’s agenda, that could very well change.
President Trump even appeared to support the idea by reposting an article advocating for the bill earlier in the year.
