Newt Gingrich, former Republican Speaker of the House, hammered the committee for going after innocent Americans, including some who weren’t even in the Capitol on January 6.
“Well, you have, both with Attorney General Garland and with this select committee on January 6, people who have run amok,” Gingrich said on Fox News. “They are breaking the rules. They are going after people in a way which is reminiscent of the British monarchy using closed-door systems that we outlawed deliberately because we’d seen it. We knew what it was like. And they’re running over people’s civil liberties. And what they need to understand is, on January 4 next year, you’re going to have a Republican majority in the House and a Republican majority in the Senate.”
Gingrich predicts that if Republicans won the majority in Congress this November—which becomes more likely as Democrats push their luck on every front—there will be a massive shake-up.
And committee members who are blowing off the law right now could end up facing repercussions as serious as the violations of law they’re committing now.
In an op-ed he published in Newsweek Gingrich even suggested the first committee the next Republican leadership team should assemble: “Select Committee on Congressional Dishonesty and Abuse of Power.”
Gingrich’s predictions are backed up by what we know has happened so far, including the fact that members of the Committee used their powers to seize phone and bank records, and then leaked that private information to the public.
While their arrogant and ruthless tactics may be an effective way to embarrass Trump supporters in the short run, they may end up paying for it big time.
