Trey Gowdy was as shocked as his viewers when a major development in the 2024 Presidential race unfolded on his interview set.
There’s nothing spontaneous when it comes to television news—especially when it comes to political stories.
Everyone from producers and news hosts to the guests’ handlers want the entire production perfectly scripted with no surprises.
But recently Fox News host Trey Gowdy was taken completely by surprise.
And the source of his stunning broadcast was none other than Republican Presidential Candidate Tim Scott.
Scott and Gowdy’s friendship is well known in the political world, but on Sunday night the politician left his friend slack jawed when he suddenly announced that he is throwing in the towel and ending his campaign.
Gowdy kicked off the interview by asking about his health since Scott was forced to miss some campaign events in Iowa due to the flu.
“How are you feeling and when are you gonna get back on the campaign trail?” Gowdy asked.
“I’ve been drinking a lot of water,” Scott replied. “I’ll be down for another couple days. But I’m looking forward to getting back on the campaign trail.”
Then Scott dropped a bombshell by announcing that he wouldn’t be back in Iowa since it’s become obvious GOP voters today aren’t buying into his Bush-era approach and absolute support for the war in Ukraine.
“But when I go back to Iowa, it will not be as a Presidential candidate,” Scott said. “I am suspending my campaign. I think the voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet have been really clear that they’re telling me, ‘Not now, Tim.’ I don’t think they’re saying, Trey, ‘No,’ but I do think they’re saying, ‘Not now.’ So, I’m gonna respect the voters and I’m gonna hold on and keep working really hard, and look forward to the other opportunity.”
No doubt, Scott was eyeing the fourth GOP debate cutoff.
He was falling far short of the 8% poll approval numbers needed to appear on stage.
Instead of suffering the indignity of getting booted out, Scott removed himself.
However, that decision clearly riled up his friend.
Gowdy was obviously shocked and started going over how much money—tens of millions of dollars—Scott still had tens of millions of dollars sitting in a Super PAC.
“You are–you are suspending your Presidential campaign?” Gowdy spluttered. “You have plenty of money. You have the highest approval of any candidate that is running and you’re– you’re a couple of states from coming to a state where you are beloved, and you are suspending your Presidential campaign?”
“I’m trying to process this information and I’m trying to do it on live television, so forgive me,” the clearly flustered news host added.
Scott’s announcement is making it clear that Democrats are failing in their effort to take down Donald Trump in 2024.
Despite the slew of felony charges thrown at him, Donald Trump continues to dominate the GOP field.
He has surged ahead of his opponents by a massive 50 points nationally and 30 points even in Iowa and New Hampshire where his competitors have been hard at work while he wades through legal cases.
With no hope for the future, other GOP candidates are dropping out while they can still do so with their dignity intact.
