The SAVE America Act is finally getting its moment.
Democrats thought they could delay this forever.
But Trump just forced Chuck Schumer into one corner he never saw coming.
House prepares to vote on SAVE America Act this week
The SAVE America Act is headed for a floor vote in the House of Representatives this week after Republicans spent months building momentum for the voter ID legislation.
The bill would require Americans to show proof of citizenship like a passport or birth certificate to register to vote and present photo ID at the polls.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) sponsored the House version with 71 co-sponsors as of February 6.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) leads the Senate push with 49 supporters backing his version of the bill.
President Trump hosted Lee along with Senators Rick Scott (R-FL) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) at the White House last week to work out a strategy for passage.
Lee posted about the meeting on X calling it a plan to "Make Elections Great Again" and asking supporters to join the "MEGA movement."
The post got more than 460,000 views, 22,000 likes, 9,000 shares, and 2,000 comments.
Conservative activist Scott Presler has been pressuring Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to pass the SAVE America Act for more than a month.
"Once a day — every single day — we all need to be posting about the SAVE America Act," Presler wrote to his 2.5 million followers.
Presler promised to knock on every representative's door to whip more votes for the bill.
Trump made another pitch for the SAVE America Act on Truth Social.
"America's Elections are Rigged, Stolen, and a Laughingstock all over the World. We are either going to fix them, or we won't have a Country any longer. I am asking all Republicans to fight for the following: SAVE AMERICA ACT!" Trump posted.
The President also discussed the bill during a sit-down interview with NBC.
"We need fair elections. We need elections where people aren't able to cheat. We're going to do that. I'm going to do that. I'm going to get it done — and by the way, it polls high, even with Democrats. They want that," Trump said.
Chuck Schumer declares total war on voter ID
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) went nuclear when he learned Republicans were moving forward with the SAVE Act vote.
"It's Jim Crow 2.0, and I called it Jim Crow 2.0, and the right wing went nuts all over the internet. That's because they know it's true," Schumer declared on MS Now.
"What they're trying to do here is the same thing that was done in the South for decades, to prevent people of color from voting," Schumer claimed.
"This is vicious and nasty, and I said to our Republican colleagues, 'It will not pass the Senate. You will not get a single Democratic vote in the Senate,'" Schumer stated.
But at least two Democrat Senators are breaking ranks.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) told FOX's Maria Bartiromo he supports voter ID.
"And now me as a Democrat, I do not believe that it's unreasonable to show ID just to vote," Fetterman said.
"And I would remind everybody that less than a year ago in Wisconsin, you know, they added that to the constitution by a 63%, you know, passing, to put that in a constitution that you have to show ID to vote," Fetterman explained.
"And they also elected a very, very liberal justice into their Supreme Court. So, it's not a radical idea for regular Americans to show your ID to vote," Fetterman continued.
Fetterman did say he didn't think the SAVE America Act had enough votes to pass the Senate.
Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) also got caught in a massive hypocrisy.
FOX News Channel reported that Ossoff demanded government-issued ID from attendees at his campaign event on February 7.
Confirmation emails for an Ossoff rally in Atlanta stated "a matching government-issued ID will be verified against the RSVP list by name to enter."
But last March Ossoff wrote on Facebook that the SAVE Act was "a nakedly partisan, totally unworkable, bad faith bill cynically intended to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters."
Ossoff requires ID to attend his events but opposes requiring it to vote in federal elections.
Polling data proves Americans overwhelmingly support voter ID
CNN reported on Pew Research Center polling from 2025 showing 83% of Americans support voter ID.
That number has been rising from 76% in 2018 to the current level.
The poll found 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans support voter ID.
Support holds across all demographics with 85% of White Americans, 82% of Latino Americans, and 76% of Black Americans backing voter ID requirements.
Rapper Nicki Minaj also spoke out supporting the SAVE America Act and many of her fans are changing their voter registration to Republican.
Minaj appeared with Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at a January summit to promote Trump accounts for newborns.
She pledged her own money to fund accounts for her fans and appeared in two videos praising Trump as "her favorite president."
Presler offered to help Minaj's fans register to vote.
Lee and Elon Musk reposted a 2024 interview where Musk discussed voter ID with Tucker Carlson.
"The purpose of not voter ID is obviously to conduct fraud in elections, obviously," Musk said.
"Their common rebuttal is like it's racist to require ID, which is insane. I think it's actually racist and patronizing to say that people can't figure out how to get ID, obviously," Musk continued.
"You need ID for everything, like the list of the things you need ID for is basically everything, except voting," Musk added.
Trump and Republicans are betting that overwhelming public support including from Democrat voters will pressure enough Senators to pass the SAVE America Act.
