Donald Trump has made it crystal clear that America's national security comes first.
The Europeans don't like that one bit.
And now Trump just made one move on Greenland that has Europe in an all out tantrum, exposing their massive failure.
Trump Appoints Special Envoy to Greenland
President Trump dropped a bombshell on Sunday night when he announced Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry would serve as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland.
"Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country's Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World," Trump wrote on Truth Social.¹
Landry didn't mince words about his mission.
"It's an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S.," Landry posted on X.²
Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen immediately went into meltdown mode.
"I am deeply upset about the appointment of a special envoy. And I am particularly upset by his statements, which I find completely unacceptable," Rasmussen told Danish media TV2.³
Copenhagen announced they would summon the U.S. ambassador to explain the appointment.
"Out of nowhere, there is now a special U.S. presidential representative, who, according to himself, is tasked with taking over Greenland. This is, of course, completely unacceptable," Rasmussen complained.⁴
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a joint statement saying, "You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security."⁵
Denmark's Arctic Neglect Exposed
Here's what the Danes don't want to talk about.
They've been asleep at the wheel on Greenland's defense for decades.
Copenhagen currently patrols an area four times the size of France with four aging inspection vessels, a single surveillance plane, and twelve dog sled teams.
That's not a defense strategy.
That's a joke.
Denmark has scrambled to pump billions into Arctic security since Trump started applying pressure.
They've announced over $6 billion in defense spending for the region in 2025 alone, including new Arctic naval vessels, long-range drones, and radar systems.⁶
A University of Copenhagen political science professor told Reuters the money hasn't made any difference with Washington.
"This appointment shows that all the money Denmark has invested in Greenland, in the defence of the Arctic, and all the friendly things we have said to the Americans, have had no effect at all," Professor Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen said.⁷
And here's the kicker.
Denmark just snubbed America by spending $9 billion on European air defense systems instead of American Patriot missiles.⁸
That's how they repay their most important NATO ally.
Why Greenland Matters to America
Greenland sits on a quarter of the world's rare earth minerals.⁹
These aren't just rocks.
They're the raw materials for smartphones, electric vehicles, military jets, and missile defense systems.
China currently controls roughly 60% of the global rare earth mining and 90% of processing.¹⁰
Beijing has Chinese companies invested in developing Greenland's mineral resources.
The island also controls the GIUK gap — the strategic maritime chokepoint between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom that governs access to the North Atlantic.¹¹
America's Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland is part of our ballistic missile early-warning system.
Vice President JD Vance visited the base in March and accused Denmark of underinvesting in the region.
The Danes know they can't protect Greenland without American help.
They just don't want to admit it.
Trump is forcing the conversation that European leaders have avoided for decades.
America shouldn't have to beg our supposed allies to take their own security seriously.
And Trump won't.
