Melania Trump is known for her elegance and grace as First Lady.
She holds Donald Trump to high standards when it comes to presidential behavior.
And Trump revealed one thing Melania says is "so unpresidential" that has crowds going wild.
Trump spills behind-the-scenes secret about Melania's biggest gripe
President Trump delivered a speech to House Republicans at their annual retreat at the Kennedy Center on Tuesday.
He went off script to share what life is like behind closed doors with First Lady Melania Trump.
The crowd erupted in laughter when Trump revealed Melania's biggest complaint about his public persona.
"My wife hates when I do this," Trump said while demonstrating his signature rally moves.
Trump explained that Melania views his famous routine as "so unpresidential."
"She's a very classy person, right?" Trump said.
He then gritted his teeth and impersonated Melania scolding him.
"She hates when I dance," Trump continued.
"I said, 'Everybody wants me to dance.'"
Trump revealed the exact line Melania uses to shame him into stopping.
"She actually said, 'Could you imagine FDR dancing?'" Trump recounted.
He paused and raised his eyebrows while scanning the crowd with a "Can you believe it?" look on his face.
The audience roared with laughter at the comparison.
Trump defends his moves with historical context
Trump wasn't about to let Melania's FDR comparison go unchallenged.
"And I said, 'There's a long history that perhaps she doesn't know,'" Trump said with a grin.
"Because he was an elegant fellow, even as a Democrat," Trump added.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt used a wheelchair after being diagnosed with polio in 1922.
Trump suggested Roosevelt wouldn't have been dancing regardless of presidential decorum.
"He was quite elegant, but he wouldn't be doing this," Trump said while demonstrating his signature move.
"But nor would too many others."
Trump revealed Melania has another presidential pet peeve beyond the dancing.
She also hates when Trump imitates weightlifters on stage during his speeches about biological males competing against women.
"She said, 'Darling please, the weightlifting is terrible,'" Trump recounted.
But Trump pushed back on Melania's claim that supporters don't actually enjoy his antics.
"And I have to say this, the dancing, they really like," Trump said of his supporters.
He described their ongoing debate about whether the crowds genuinely appreciate his performances.
"She said, 'They don't like it. They're just being nice to you,'" Trump recalled.
"I said that's not right, the place goes crazy. They're screaming 'Dance!'"
The Trump dance became a cultural phenomenon
Trump's signature dance move originated at his 2020 campaign rallies and exploded during his 2024 presidential run.
The move features Trump swaying his hips back and forth while pumping his fists to the Village People's "Y.M.C.A."
Trump concluded over 110 rallies with the dance as he exited the stage during the 2024 campaign.
The dance went viral across social media and spread far beyond politics.
Athletes in the NFL, NBA, soccer, and baseball adopted the move for their celebration routines.
U.S. national soccer team captain Christian Pulisic used the dance after scoring a goal in November 2024.
Three Detroit Tigers players performed it during a game Trump attended at Yankee Stadium.
The NFL announced it would not penalize players who performed the Trump dance during games.
Professional golfers, UFC fighters, and international athletes jumped on the bandwagon.
Even foreign leaders got in on the action.
Argentina's President Javier Milei performed the Trump dance at a gala at Mar-a-Lago.
The cultural impact extended to the music charts.
"Y.M.C.A." appeared on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic chart for the first time in 47 years because of Trump's use of the song.
Village People songwriter Victor Willis said the track grossed "several million dollars" since Trump adopted it.
The dance became so popular that Trump brought the Village People on stage at his pre-inaugural victory rally in January 2025.
Melania even joined in the dancing during Fourth of July celebrations at the White House.
She performed her own interpretation of the moves on the White House balcony while Trump looked on with admiration.
But behind the scenes, Trump revealed she still considers the whole thing "unpresidential."
Trump capped off his House GOP speech by doing exactly what Melania hates.
He clapped and danced to "Y.M.C.A." as he walked offstage while the crowd cheered.
