Donald Trump got blindsided by a lettuce question in the Oval Office Friday.
Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked when it would be safe to eat lettuce again.
Trump's answer turned a question about salad into a threat against two entire countries.
Doocy Ambushes Trump With a Question Nobody Wanted to Ask
Trump was standing in the Oval Office Friday when Doocy brought up the parasite outbreak tied to bagged lettuce.
Doocy laid out the ugly details, telling the president people in nine states were dealing with explosive diarrhea.
Then he asked the question everyone in that room was thinking but nobody wanted to say out loud.
When would it be safe to eat lettuce again.
Trump froze for a second, then started laughing.
He admitted it was the first time anyone had ever asked him that question.
Still laughing, he turned the tables on the reporter standing in front of him.
"If you are, get the hell out of here, Peter."
The room cracked up.
It was the kind of moment that only happens when a president stops performing and just reacts like a normal guy getting an absurd question.
Trump Turns the Joke Into a Tariff Threat on Mexico and Canada
Trump didn't stop at the joke.
He pivoted straight into policy, floating a major tariff on Mexico over the lettuce and a big tariff on Canada over the wildfire smoke choking American skies.
That's not an empty threat from a president bluffing for cameras.
Days earlier, Trump had already reached for a never-before-used 1930s tariff law to hit Canada with a 50 percent duty covering everything from wine to sporting goods.
Doocy's question wasn't coming out of nowhere either, since the outbreak behind it has already left thousands of Americans sick, with investigators pointing to bagged lettuce tied to Taylor Farms' Mexican supply chain.
Canada, meanwhile, is fighting almost 900 wildfires right now, and the smoke has fouled the air over major American cities, Washington, D.C. included.
Trump has already accused Canada of refusing to manage its own forests, calling the smoke a yearly disaster that costs America billions of dollars.
Two countries, two problems, and one president who just told both of them the bill is coming.
Most presidents would have dodged the lettuce question entirely and let a press aide clean it up later.
Trump answered it himself, live, on camera, and turned it into a warning shot at Mexico and Canada before the segment even ended.
This isn't some minor bug making the rounds, either.
Health officials say this year's cyclospora tally has already climbed to six times what it was at this same point last year, and Taco Bell has pulled the supplier's lettuce from its restaurants nationwide while the investigation plays out.
That's the scale of the mess sitting behind Doocy's joke of a question, and it's exactly why Trump reached for tariffs instead of a shrug.
Democrats Try to Blame Trump for a Mexican Supply Chain Problem
While Trump was in the Oval Office laughing off the whole thing, Democrats spent the week trying to pin the outbreak on him.
Sen. Patty Murray claimed it was the "worst outbreak in U.S. history" and blamed Trump for it on social media.
Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed went even further, blaming the CDC, the FDA, and even oil companies for a parasite that came from lettuce grown in central Mexico.
Not one of them mentioned that the lettuce was grown on Mexican soil, processed by a private company, and shipped into the United States before anyone in Washington ever touched it.
Democrats are furious that food from another country is making Americans sick, and somehow the fault lands on the one guy threatening to tariff the country that grew it.
That's the entire Democrat playbook in one lettuce joke: blame Trump for everything, then act shocked when he's the one who actually goes after the source.
Trump didn't need a task force or a talking-points memo to handle any of this.
He cracked a joke, kicked a reporter out for laughs, and threatened the two foreign neighbors actually responsible for America's problems this week.
That's the difference between a president who reacts like a normal person and a party that turns an upset stomach into an excuse to attack him.
