The same press corps that spent a decade inventing Republican civil wars found a new one to sell this week.
This time they had a real poll number to make the story feel true.
But the number Democrats actually want you distracted from has nothing to do with Vance or Rubio at all.
The Rivalry Story Has Been Running for Months Before This Poll
A new Emerson poll shows Vice President JD Vance at 39 percent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at 38 percent among Republican primary voters.
This did not start with this poll.
Reuters ran its "JD or Marco" story back in March, reporting that Trump has been privately asking allies to pick a favorite.
The Associated Press followed months later with its own piece framing two members of the same administration as circling rivals.
Now this week's one point survey gap became the excuse to run the same story a third time.
The White House shot the framing down directly, months ago and again this week.
"There is one camp – President Trump's camp," spokeswoman Anna Kelly said.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott backed her up.
"Rubio and the entire administration is 100% in lockstep," Pigott said.
Emerson's own director admits the numbers are real, even while reporters oversell what they mean.
"It looks like a two horse race," Spencer Kimball said.
A two horse race between two Republicans the base actually likes is not a five alarm fire, and every reporter chasing it knows the difference.
The Movement in the Numbers Is Real but It Is Not a Scandal
Vance led Rubio 52 to 20 back in February.
That gap is basically gone now, down to a single point.
Emerson's spring polling found Republicans over 50 breaking for Rubio's hawkish record on Iran by six points, while Republicans under 50 stuck with Vance.
That is two generations of the same conservative coalition picking a favorite for a primary that is still more than two years away.
Nobody in this administration is losing sleep over it, and neither should you.
Democrats Quietly Built an Eleven Point Midterm Lead While Reporters Chased a Fake Feud
Here is the number the media buried under all that Vance versus Rubio noise.
Emerson's same July survey found Democrats leading the generic congressional ballot by 11 points, 53 to 42.
That is up from a 10 point Democrat lead back in April.
A separate Fox News survey found a 7 point Democrat edge, the largest in that poll since 1996.
Chuck Schumer and his party are not doing a single thing to earn that number – they are simply watching Republicans get distracted while it grows.
Every hour cable news spends manufacturing a Trump administration soap opera is an hour Republicans are not spending on the midterm map.
Redistricting has already added red leaning seats to the House column, so the map is not a lost cause.
But an 11 point national environment does not close itself, and Schumer knows exactly how this game works.
He wins when Republicans fight each other over headlines instead of fighting Democrats over seats.
Vance and Rubio are not the problem here.
The reporters treating a one point primary gap like a crisis, while burying an 11 point Democrat lead four months from Election Day, are the ones with an agenda.
Conservative voters have seen this trick before – manufacture a Republican fight, bury the real Democrat threat, repeat every cycle.
It worked in past cycles because nobody called it out while Election Day was still close enough to fix.
This time, Republicans have four months to make sure it does not work again.
