Mikie Sherrill blamed a software glitch for 6,600 noncitizens landing on New Jersey's voter rolls.
Jeff Van Drew was not buying it and sent her twelve pointed questions instead.
Now the congressman is asking whether Trenton committed a nefarious act instead of a mistake.
Van Drew Refuses to Buy the Vendor Excuse
Sherrill's story has stayed the same since the day she broke the news.
A "serious software error" in the Motor Vehicle Commission let 6,600 people onto the rolls between June 2023 and June 2024.
Nearly 400 of them cast ballots before anyone caught it.
Sherrill blamed the state's outside vendor, IDEMIA, and pointed out the mess started under her predecessor, Phil Murphy.
Van Drew was not interested in the excuse.
He led 19 House Republicans in a letter demanding Sherrill explain, in writing, how this happened and who is responsible.
Then he asked the question Trenton clearly did not want on the record.
"How do you know this was just a software glitch and not a nefarious act?"
That is not a question you ask someone you believe.
Van Drew chairs the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight, which means he already has subpoena power sitting on his desk.
He gave Sherrill until August 21 to answer.
Van Drew has said that if his questions go unanswered, subpoenas are already on the table.
The Twelve Questions Sherrill Does Not Want to Answer
The letter is not vague.
Republicans want county-by-county numbers and whether any New Jersey race was won by a margin thinner than the pool of ineligible votes cast in it.
They also want Trenton to fully cooperate with the Justice Department and Homeland Security, two agencies Sherrill's administration has been slow to work with.
Every affected applicant said no when a driver's license questionnaire asked if they were a citizen.
New Jersey registered every one of them to vote regardless.
That is not a rounding error in a database.
That is a state government being told the truth and choosing to ignore it.
Rep. Chris Smith, who signed the letter alongside Van Drew, called it "a catastrophic and negligent betrayal of election integrity and New Jerseyans' trust."
Notice who did not sign.
Rep. Tom Kean Jr., the third Republican in New Jersey's delegation, sat this one out while Van Drew and Smith carried the fight.
New Jersey Is Not the First Democrat State Caught Doing This
Sherrill wants this to look like a one-time IT accident nobody could have predicted.
It is not.
Oregon's DMV admitted in 2024 to wrongfully registering hundreds of noncitizens going back to 2021.
Pennsylvania's own secretary of state uncovered a nearly identical glitch in Philadelphia back in 2017.
Colorado mistakenly mailed voter registration postcards to 30,000 noncitizens in 2022, and a 2019 audit found California's DMV program had let roughly 1,500 slip through the same way.
Every one of those states runs the same Democrat-favored setup – automatic registration tied to a DMV visit, with no proof of citizenship required at the counter.
Republicans warned for years this exact loophole would let noncitizens onto the rolls.
Democrats dismissed it as a conspiracy theory.
Trenton just proved the theory.
President Trump had already put a bigger number on the table before Sherrill admitted anything, claiming as many as 35,152 noncitizens were registered in New Jersey alone.
Sherrill's administration landed on 6,600, a fraction of the president's figure, and wants that gap to settle the argument in her favor.
Van Drew is not settling anything until he sees the vendor's raw data himself.
What Comes Next for Sherrill
August 21 is not a soft deadline.
Van Drew already runs a subcommittee built for exactly this kind of standoff, with the power to summon witnesses and demand documents the moment voluntary cooperation breaks down.
If Sherrill stonewalls, the next stop is a formal hearing that could put MVC officials, Murphy-era holdovers, and IDEMIA representatives under oath in front of Congress.
Sherrill campaigned as a straight-shooting Navy veteran who would clean up Trenton.
She is now the first-term governor whose administration registered thousands of self-declared noncitizens to vote and needs a subpoena threat just to start explaining why.
Nineteen House Republicans from nine states signed their names to make sure she cannot quietly wait this out.
August 21 is coming, and so is the paperwork.
