Zohran Mamdani spent months selling New York on his unshakable smile and total confidence.
More than a dozen political insiders just told reporters a very different story about what happens once the cameras turn off.
Now Mamdani has a new nickname and it is not going away anytime soon.
Zoflake Is Born
More than a dozen political insiders told the New York Post that Mamdani cannot handle criticism, and they were willing to say it even while asking to stay anonymous.
The Post's verdict landed in one word – "Zoflake."
One consultant put it bluntly: "I see more and more he cannot handle criticism, but mainly from elected officials who he thinks he can push around."
A City Council member added an even simpler line: "He's so thin-skinned and reads everything."
That is not a description of a confident leader. That is a description of a man who checks his phone every time somebody says something he does not like.
According to the Post, Mamdani "huffily badgers critics" and "harbors petty grudges against prominent pols" behind that trademark smile he wears for the cameras.
When Jewish leaders pushed back on his rhetoric about Israel and Benjamin Netanyahu, Mamdani did not shrug it off like a mayor with thick skin is supposed to.
He got upset. Sources say he personally reached out to elected officials who had criticized him publicly, objecting to the idea that his own words had inflamed anything.
He Pressures Critics To Delete Their Own Posts
Queens Borough President Donovan Richards found this out the hard way.
Richards posted criticism of the Democratic Socialists of America on social media, and Mamdani allegedly pressured him to take it down.
Think about that for a second – a sitting mayor leaning on another elected official to delete a post because it hurt his feelings.
The Post also reported Mamdani got booed at a Staten Island event and reportedly fumed after being left off the speaking list at a slain soldier's funeral.
Staff describe his treatment of people who challenge him as cold and terse, with critics reportedly relegated to what insiders called "the back of the line."
That is the private Mamdani – petty, brittle, keeping score on every slight – hiding behind the public Mamdani who wants New Yorkers to believe he floats above the noise.
New York Already Lived Through This Socialist Playbook
New York has seen this movie before.
Bill de Blasio spent eight years as mayor with a documented habit of feuding with the press, at one point publicly snubbing a New York Post reporter at a news conference.
Socialist politicians keep running into the same wall – they build entire careers on moral certainty, and moral certainty cannot survive contact with an actual disagreement.
When you tell voters you alone have the answers, every critic becomes an enemy of the truth instead of just someone with a different opinion.
That is why Mamdani cannot let a Queens borough president's tweet just sit there. That is why a borough president's honest post feels like a threat instead of feedback.
A mayor who spends his energy managing his own image instead of managing the city is a mayor who is going to get run over by New York's actual problems – crime, housing, a budget that does not balance itself.
Zoflake is a funny nickname. What it describes is not funny at all for the eight million people counting on this man to run the largest city in America.
