TJ Hoover was minutes from having his organs removed while he was still alive.

The Man Who Survived His Own Organ Harvest
In October 2021, TJ Hoover overdosed and was declared dead, clearing the way for organ donation.
His family agreed to donate his organs, trusting the system to do its job.
As surgeons prepared to begin, Hoover showed clear signs of awareness on the table.
Physicians stopped the procedure because they believed he was still alive.
They were right. TJ Hoover is alive today.
He stood beside Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. this week as Kennedy announced the decertification of Network for Hope, the organ procurement group responsible for Hoover's case.
"TJ, we're grateful you're here, and grateful to the physicians who did the right thing," Kennedy said.
Federal Investigators Found This Happened Far More Than Once
HHS didn't decertify Network for Hope over one bad case.
Federal reviewers examined the organization's cases and found "concerning features" in nearly 30 percent of them.
Seventy three patients showed neurological signs completely incompatible with organ donation.
At least 28 patients may not have even been deceased when the organ procurement process began.
Kennedy said reviewers found patients placed on the donation pathway who never should have been there, along with repeated failures in clinical judgment, oversight, and patient safety.
Network for Hope had already been warned once before.
HHS ordered corrective action plans over a year ago. The organization promised to fix the problems.
Federal reviewers went back in May 2026 and found the same deficiencies still there.
Biden's HHS Looked at This and Closed the Case Anyway
Here's the part that should make every parent furious.
An Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network committee reviewed the case that sparked this entire investigation under the Biden administration.
They closed it. No action taken.
The previous administration knew about patient-safety violations tied to this exact organization and chose to do nothing.
It took a new HHS secretary willing to actually look at the evidence to shut this down.
Network for Hope CEO Barry Massa says the organization "strongly disagrees" with the decision and plans to appeal.
He points to a new "pause in procedure" policy the group helped write into Kentucky law.
That policy exists because TJ Hoover almost died on an operating table waiting for organs to be removed while he was still breathing.
This Is Not the First Time This Has Happened Under This System
Network for Hope isn't an isolated failure.
HHS decertified the University of Miami's organ procurement agency in September over its own pattern of patient-safety failures.
A separate organ network in New Jersey is now under congressional investigation after witnesses say staff were told to proceed with a recovery on a patient who had "reanimated."
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz didn't mince words about what comes next for any organization that fails the same test.
"If you can't be trusted to safeguard patients, we'll find organizations that can," Oz said.
Nearly 100,000 Americans are waiting on a transplant list right now.
Thirteen of them die every single day waiting for an organ that never comes.
The system that's supposed to save those lives just got caught trying to take one that wasn't ready to be taken.
