Maine Democrats dumped Graham Platner as their Senate candidate after a rape allegation surfaced, on top of old social media posts about military sexual assault that he later blamed on combat trauma when confronted.
Their replacement should have been a clean reset.
Instead, reports confirmed the new nominee fathered two children with his second cousin.
The story set off a wave of disgusted reactions online the moment it spread.
Gruters didn't need to invent a punchline.
Maine Democrats handed him one.
The List Keeps Growing
Platner's replacement is just one entry.
A Hawaii Democrat running for Congress got knocked out in a viral beach brawl this week and now faces felony terroristic threatening charges.
New York's Zohran Mamdani, an avowed democratic socialist, has become the national face of the party's leftward lurch, and Republicans are already running ads warning "your city could be next."
North Carolina's largest school district just made headlines hiring a transgender elementary school teacher, feeding the exact narrative Gruters is selling about a party that's lost touch with normal families.
Democrats produced every headline on that list themselves.
Gruters is simply doing what any RNC chairman would do a hundred days out.
He's stapling the headlines together and mailing them to swing voters.
Every item on that list is a matter of public record, not a talking point Gruters invented.
Democrats Are Still Winning The Polling War
Here's the part Democrats will point to.
National generic ballot polling still shows Democrats with a slight edge heading into the fall, and Pew found voters ranking the economy as their top concern over any culture war fight.
Gruters knows the polling too, and that's exactly why he's making this case now instead of waiting until October.
A generic ballot lead built on economic frustration with Republicans can evaporate fast once voters actually meet the specific people Democrats are running.
Nobody votes for a generic ballot.
They vote for a name on a ballot, and right now several of those names come with a police report or a paternity story attached.
That's the bet Gruters is making, and it's the same bet that's worked for Republicans going back to the Clinton era: let the candidate be the message.
Democrats spent a decade calling Republicans a threat to democracy while running on vibes.
Gruters just handed the RNC's midterm strategy back to specifics, and specifics are a lot harder for Democrats to spin away than a poll number.
