Now a Democrat running for Texas Senate wants Americans looking to Europe as the model instead.
Then Elon Musk read James Talarico's comments about America and answered with a single word.
Talarico Told Texans America Is Backsliding on Democracy
James Talarico sat down for a podcast interview back in June 2024.
He wasn't the Democratic Senate nominee yet.
He was just a state legislator talking to a friendly host on the MeidasTouch Network.
But the tape never disappeared.
"We haven't lived up to the promise of democracy," Talarico said.
He told his audience America was falling behind other nations, and he singled out Western Europe as the place we should be looking to instead.
Then he pointed Americans toward the fix.
Not Texas values.
Not the Constitution.
Western Europe.
He said that's where America should turn for lessons on finally building the kind of democracy he doesn't think we have yet.
The clip sat buried for two years.
This week it resurfaced, and it ripped through social media.
Elon Musk saw it.
He didn't write a paragraph.
He didn't need one.
Musk answered James Talarico's entire theory of American democracy with a single word: no.

Here's what makes this whole thing so rich.
Just months before Talarico's clip resurfaced, Vice President JD Vance stood in that same Europe and said the opposite thing.
Vance told European leaders their continent, not America, was the one in real democratic trouble.
He pointed to European courts canceling elections, censorship crackdowns, and governments turning on their own voters.
Democrats did not thank him for the warning.
They melted down.
Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton went on television and put Vance in the same category as Adolf Hitler, likening his free speech remarks to the reasoning the Nazi dictator once used to justify mass murder.
Strip away the party labels and the two moments are making the identical claim in opposite directions – one says Europe is the cautionary tale, the other says Europe is the answer key, and Democrats only reach for "Hitler" when the truth-teller has an R next to his name.
That's not an accident.
That's the whole party's playbook, and Talarico just handed conservatives a perfect example of it.
Talarico Also Walked Back His "God Is Nonbinary" and Six Genders Claims
Talarico has a pattern, and it's showing up right when it matters most.
As his race against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has tightened into a dead heat, Talarico has quietly walked back some of his most radical statements.
He once claimed "God is nonbinary."
He once said there are six genders.
Now, with Election Day close and Musk's America PAC pouring money into ads against him, Talarico says those comments went too far.
"I was being provocative with that statement," he admitted, blaming the backlash on selective editing rather than his own words.
Funny how the backsliding comment never got the same walk-back treatment – at least not until Fox News asked his campaign about it directly.
A spokesperson pushed back, insisting Talarico thinks America is unmatched anywhere on earth.
That's not what the tape says.
Ken Paxton Leads Talarico With Voters Over 50 in Texas Senate Race
This is exactly why Talarico's makeover isn't working on the voters who remember what he actually said.
A recent AARP survey found Talarico leading overall, but Paxton holding a commanding edge with voters 50 and older.
Younger voters are buying the campaign trail version of Talarico.
Older Texans, the ones who lived through the Cold War and know what a real threat to democracy looks like, are not.
They remember a teacher-turned-politician who said America needs Europe's guidance.
They remember every other radical claim that came out of his mouth before he needed their votes.
They're the ones asking a simple question – if he'll walk back what he said about God and gender the moment it costs him votes, what does he actually believe?
Nothing about this is complicated.
Talarico said what he believed when nobody was supposed to be watching.
Now that Texans are watching, he wants credit for a patriotism he never showed until the race got close.
Elon Musk didn't need three paragraphs to see through it.
He needed one word, and on November 3 Texas gets to answer with a ballot.
