Stockbridge elected a 22-year-old college student to run their city.
Ten months later he sat through a 10-hour hearing answering for his own text messages.
What he admitted under oath is exactly why the council voted him out.
Stockbridge City Council Votes to Remove Mayor Jayden Williams From Office
Jayden Williams made history in January when he took office as Stockbridge's youngest mayor ever.
By Saturday night he was gone.
The Stockbridge City Council voted to impeach and remove Williams, 23, after a nearly 10-hour investigative hearing.
Presiding Judge Gino Brogdon Sr. ran the proceeding, and one councilwoman was recused for potential bias before it even started.
City attorneys laid out two separate cases against him – misuse of taxpayer money and his conduct with a former mentee.
Neither one was pretty.
Hundreds of Messages With 18-Year-Old High School Student Take Center Stage
An independent investigation found that Williams exchanged sexually explicit images with a high school student who had just turned 18.
The two met while discussing the young man joining Williams' mentorship program, and the conversations moved from Instagram to text.
City attorneys introduced hundreds of those messages at the hearing, and Williams acknowledged on the record that some of them were explicit.
He had previously told a local reporter he didn't even remember whether he'd exchanged the images.
Under oath, with the messages in front of him, that story fell apart.
His attorney, Robert Kenner Jr., tried to draw a line around the timeline – arguing the exchange happened in December, before Williams was sworn in.
"We spent approximately two hours talking about your text messages," Kenner told the panel, clearly frustrated with where the hearing's focus had landed.
Police reviewed the relationship and did not file criminal charges, since the student was 18 and legally an adult.
That didn't stop the council from treating it as disqualifying conduct for a sitting mayor.
Misused City Funds Add Fuel to the Case Against Williams
While the messages dominated the hearing, Williams also had to answer for his spending.
Investigators found he used his city-issued purchasing card on haircuts, movie tickets, clothing and a Father's Day meal.
Councilman Elton Alexander, now serving as interim mayor, said Williams gave shifting explanations for one purchase in particular – a $322.92 charge at a jewelry store.
Williams first claimed it was gift cards for staff, then said he'd handed them out to community members.
Investigators pulled the actual receipt, and it didn't match his story at all – it showed drinks and several Father's Day dinners, not gift cards.
Williams says the mix-up happened because his personal card looks like the city card.
Nobody on the council bought it.
This Isn't the First Time a Young Mayor's Messages Became the Story
Stockbridge is a nonpartisan municipal race, and nothing on the record ties Williams to either party – so this isn't a story about red versus blue.
It's a story about how little scrutiny gets applied to charismatic young candidates before voters hand them a gavel.
That pattern isn't new.
Former Sebastopol, California Mayor Robert Jacob, a Democrat, was sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of exchanging lewd material with a minor and luring him to his house with the promise of odd jobs.
Jacob's case involved a minor and criminal charges; Williams' case involves neither.
But the through-line is the same – a young official trades on charisma and image, wins the seat, and it's the private messages nobody vetted that eventually take him down.
Why This Should Worry Stockbridge Before the Special Election
Stockbridge didn't get fooled by a career con man – they elected someone with almost no track record because the campaign felt fresh, and nobody stress-tested that before Election Day.
A city purchasing card is not a personality quirk to explain away – it's public money, and "I got confused" doesn't hold up when the receipt contradicts your story twice.
The mentee situation is where it gets uglier, because an elected official trading explicit images with a teenager he was supposed to be mentoring is the kind of judgment call that should have ended his candidacy before it started.
Whatever Georgia law says about the student's age, "not illegal" and "fit to hold office" have never been the same test, and the council just proved it.
A special election is coming, and reporting indicates Williams may try to run for his old seat right back.
Stockbridge will decide a second time whether a fresh face is enough.
