Donald Trump spent over a year calling Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator who refused to hold elections.
This weekend Trump told Ukrainians to find a new leader entirely, then dropped a stunning announcement hours later.
What happened within hours of that insult is something Zelensky never saw coming.
Trump Spent Over a Year Demanding Zelensky Face Voters
Trump first called Zelensky a "dictator without elections" back in February 2025, blasting him for clinging to power without a vote.
Ukraine has not held a national election since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022, and Zelensky has long argued that holding a wartime vote would be irresponsible.
Daily Wire and Breitbart both reported the same blunt line from Trump that stuck for over a year – Zelensky was a leader without a mandate.
Fox News reported that Zelensky appeared to soften that position only after Trump kept hammering him publicly.
Then on Saturday, standing outside the White House, Trump dropped the line that should have been the headline on its own.
"I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal," Trump told reporters, speaking directly to the Ukrainian people over Zelensky's head.
He said Zelensky "could have settled it many times and he chose not to," and blamed him by name for dragging out the war.
Trump even brought up the diesel fuel strikes, accusing Zelensky of hitting Russian refineries after being told not to because it was "a world problem."
An Energy Ceasefire Zelensky Never Delivered in Four Years of War
Less than 24 hours after torching Zelensky in public, Trump announced on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "ENERGY CEASEFIRE."
"Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine," Trump wrote, warning both sides not to break it.
It is the exact kind of deal Zelensky spent years claiming he wanted and never managed to close.
The timing was impossible to miss – Trump humiliates Zelensky on Saturday, then claims a ceasefire win on Sunday.
Even Zelensky's own reaction gave away how little control he actually had over the moment.
He thanked Trump for the announcement, then immediately complained that Russia had been hitting Ukraine with drones "all day today."
Zelensky added that a power plant in Kharkiv had just been struck.
Moscow, notably, said nothing at all.
Zelensky admitted his own government is still "awaiting clear details" of the dialogue between Washington and Moscow – which says plenty about how little Kyiv actually knows about what Russia agreed to.
That is not the posture of a leader in control of his own war.
It is a pattern Ukraine watchers have seen before – past ceasefire attempts, including an Easter truce earlier this year, fell apart within days under a mix of Russian strikes and mutual finger pointing.
The thing that fires me up most about this story is simple.
Trump did in one weekend what Zelensky could not do in four years of war.
He did it by going around him, not through him.
Zelensky has spent four years insisting elections were impossible.
The whole time, he's leaned on Western money and weapons to stay in power.
Trump just showed Kyiv – and Moscow – the fastest way to a real ceasefire is cutting Zelensky out of it entirely.
This isn't the first time Trump has shown Zelensky up this way.
It won't be the last, either, as long as Zelensky keeps stalling on elections.
Every day without a vote in Kyiv is another day Trump gets to ask why Zelensky answers to nobody.
If this ceasefire holds even a week, thank Trump.
He pressured both capitals directly.
Zelensky still hasn't found the leadership Americans have demanded from him since February 2025.
And if it collapses like every ceasefire before it, we already know who broke it first.
Look at Kharkiv's power plant.
