Google and Apple already caved and slapped Gulf of America on every map on earth.
Now Trump wants that same playbook to erase Mexico from an entire American state.
Trump just tied New Mexico's name to a claim about stolen elections that Democrats cannot stand to hear.
Trump Already Rewrote the Map Once and Won
Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America within hours of his second inauguration in January 2025.
Apple and Google folded within weeks and switched the name on their maps worldwide.
By August 2026, Trump moved on to Lake Ontario, signing an order to rebrand it Lake America in the middle of a trade fight with Canada.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul called it absurd – and Trump ignored her completely.
Before any of that, Trump had already ordered Alaska's tallest peak renamed from Denali back to Mount McKinley on his first day back in office.
That one stuck too, no matter how many Alaska Native leaders objected.
Now he is aiming that same pen at New Mexico, and this time he is not stopping at a lake.
The Elections Claim Trump Dropped Into a Real Estate Pitch
Trump posted on Truth Social that New Mexico should become New America, claiming the switch would boost home values and incomes.
Then he tacked on a line nobody asked him to explain.
"Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again," Trump wrote.
That line was not pulled out of thin air.
New Mexico is one of six states the Trump Justice Department sued in December 2025 for refusing to hand over its voter registration rolls.
The DOJ said the stonewalling fit a pattern of "open defiance" of federal election law.
A federal judge dismissed that case in July 2026, ruling the DOJ had not shown specific proof of bad registrations, not that New Mexico's rolls were clean.
New Mexico's elections chief had already handed over birth years while withholding Social Security numbers, the kind of partial compliance that keeps a real audit from ever happening.
That is the real fight behind "Crooked Elections," not a throwaway insult.
This is not the first time Trump has floated the idea either.
He pitched the same rebrand at the RNC Midterm Convention on September 9, telling the crowd "the people love it."
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham had already dismissed the whole idea as a political stunt.
She told Fox News Digital the state's name "isn't up for debate."
Her reasoning: New Mexico existed under that name before the United States did.
She also said "the White House wastes time coloring on maps" while her administration handles child care, education, and housing.
She did not mention that New Mexico's own constitution spells the state's name directly into Article I, which means any real change would need more than a Truth Social post.
Why the Map Game Keeps Working On Blue State Governors
New Mexico lawmakers did not take it well.
Democratic Representative Melanie Stansbury posted the reaction half of Santa Fe was thinking: "Oh hell no."
Senator Martin Heinrich chimed in too, vowing he would always call "the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, New Mexico" by their real names.
Even Trump's harshest critics can see the pattern forming, and they still cannot stop it.
That is the tell.
Here is what fires me up most about this – every time a Democrat official melts down over a name, Trump wins twice.
He wins the news cycle, and he wins the argument that the opposition cares more about map labels than about gas prices or the border.
Hochul ran the same play during the Lake Ontario fight, and it only handed Trump another week of free coverage.
If New Mexico actually becomes New America, Trump gets a win that costs him nothing and infuriates Democrats for the next decade.
If it never happens, he still gets the fight, the headlines, and tech companies already folding before the ink is dry on the last one.
Look at the pattern – Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, Denali, and now New Mexico, four shots at the map in under two years.
Every single one followed the same script: Trump posts it, Democrats panic on camera, and the tech companies quietly update their apps anyway.
Conservatives do not need a constitutional amendment to call this one a win – the fight itself is the point, and Trump knows it better than anyone in Santa Fe.
