Donald Trump stood at the White House and said China got its hands on two hundred twenty million American voter files.
Two days later, Senator Mark Warner went on ABC to defend Democrats blocking new voter security laws.
Then Warner made a claim about Virginia's voting rules that Karl immediately shut down.
Warner Says Virginia Has Photo ID, His Host Says Otherwise
Jonathan Karl asked Warner a simple question on This Week.
Should Democrats support requiring photo identification to vote, given how many Americans want it.
Warner did not answer the question.
Instead he tried to dodge behind his home state.
"You know what? In Virginia, we have voter I.D. and photo I.D.," Warner said.
Karl did not let it slide.
He told Warner flatly that the claim was false.
Karl reminded the senator that he votes in Virginia himself.
He explained that Virginia voters can hand over a bank statement or a utility bill instead of a photo.
He noted that if a voter has none of those, Virginia lets them sign an affidavit and vote anyway.
Warner tried to recover by insisting Virginia still requires some kind of ID, just not necessarily a photo.
That is not the same thing as photo I.D., and Karl knew it.
Virginia's election code confirms Karl was right.
State law allows a long list of non-photo documents, and it lets voters who show up with nothing simply attest to who they are under penalty of felony.
A voter with zero acceptable paperwork still gets a provisional ballot instead of being turned away.
None of that requires a photograph.
Democrats Have Run This Play Before
Virginia's affidavit loophole did not appear out of nowhere.
Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell signed a real photo ID requirement into law in 2013.
Virginia Democrats voted to repeal that law in early 2020, and Gov. Ralph Northam signed the sworn affidavit option into law that spring, the same option Warner now points to as proof his state has "voter ID."
Warner's own party wrote the very loophole he was defending on national television.
Warner is not the first Democrat to fumble this exact argument.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer keeps insisting Democrats have no problem with photo ID itself, even while branding the SAVE America Act "Jim Crow 2.0."
Republicans decided to test that claim directly.
Sen. Jon Husted asked the Senate for unanimous consent to pass a stripped-down bill requiring nothing but a photo ID to vote.
Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley blocked it on the spot.
He pivoted straight to disenfranchisement talk, calling the SAVE America Act an attempt to strip voters of their rights.
He also complained that some states will accept a gun permit at the polls but not a student ID.
Most of those same states accept a student ID too, so the complaint falls apart on its own.
Every time a Republican asks a Democrat to simply say yes to photo ID, the answer turns into a maze.
Why Your Vote Is the Target
This fight is not about paperwork.
It is about whether the vote you cast counts the same as everyone else's.
A 2025 Pew Research Center survey found 83 percent of Americans want government-issued photo ID to vote, including 71 percent of Democrats and Democratic leaners.
Warner's party is not listening to its own voters on this one.
Trump has pushed the SAVE America Act as election security, not suppression, and Thursday night he tied it directly to foreign interference concerns.
Warner filled his ABC airtime with talk about China and Russia instead of answering a yes-or-no question about photo ID.
That is the tell.
When a senator cannot describe Virginia's voting rules correctly on national television, ask yourself why he needed to fudge it in the first place.
The SAVE America Act would require proof of citizenship to register, photo ID to vote, and would force states to scrub noncitizens off the rolls.
Every one of those things sounds like common sense to the 65-year-old grandmother standing in line at her polling place with her driver's license already in hand.
Democrats keep telling her that same requirement is somehow dangerous.
