Kamala Harris once urged donations to a Minnesota bail fund that went on to free a killer.
Texas Democrats just embraced the same bail reform playbook in the state's biggest Senate race.
The group James Talarico called irreplaceable has a body count he never mentioned.
The $300 That Cost Six Lives
The Texas Organizing Project bailed Shane James out of jail for a combined $300.
James was facing three misdemeanor family-assault charges at the time – charges involving his own parents and a sibling.
The morning after his March 2022 release, James cut the GPS monitor off his ankle.
Three warrants went out for his arrest.
For 21 months, those warrants sat on paper while Shane James walked free.
Then he went on a killing spree across San Antonio and Austin that left six people dead – including the same parents whose assault charges got him arrested in the first place.
The Texas Organizing Project later admitted it worked with the Bexar County public defender's office to get James released.
It said James cleared its screening process.
It said bail organizations cannot predict what a defendant will do next.
James Talarico endorsed them anyway.
196 Bexar County Cases, Nearly 30 Percent Re-Arrested
The Shane James case was not a one-time mistake by an otherwise responsible organization.
A 2024 KSAT investigation found at least 196 Bexar County cases where the Texas Organizing Project posted bond, counting only the period since October 2022, when jail officials started tracking the group specifically.
Nearly 30 percent of those defendants – 58 people – ended up with new arrest warrants.
That is not a screening failure. That is the system working exactly as progressives designed it.
Benjamin Sanchez Jr. is another name Texans should know.
He was a convicted felon with two prior burglary convictions.
The group had him out on bond just 11 days after his latest arrest.
He went on to catch new burglary charges and was eventually sentenced to six years in prison.
That same Minnesota Freedom Fund Harris promoted in 2020 bailed out George Howard while he awaited trial on a domestic-assault charge.
Howard was later convicted in a deadly road rage shooting.
This is a national pattern: progressive bail funds releasing dangerous people, those people committing more crimes, and Democrat politicians refusing to answer for it.
Talarico is not an outlier. He is the template.
The $2,500 Donation Behind Austin's $150 Million Police Cut
This is not new information about James Talarico.
In 2020, he donated $2,500 in campaign funds to the Austin Justice Coalition – the group that pushed the Austin City Council toward a $150 million cut to the police department's budget.
Homicides in Austin spiked as law enforcement units were dissolved and cadet classes cancelled.
Talarico dismissed the backlash to those donations as "scare tactics."
He called ICE a "secret police force" he wants torn down.
He voted against House Bill 1900, the law that penalizes Texas cities for cutting police funding.
He voted against Senate Bill 4, which increased penalties for human smuggling.
He was absent for the vote on Senate Bill 955, which increased punishment for human trafficking.
Now he is trying to run as a "border security Democrat."
He is telling Texans he supports the police.
And the Texas Organizing Project is one of his most prominent endorsers.
A Senate Seat That Could Take This Bail Fund Playbook National
Texas is the seat that decides whether that bail model spreads from San Antonio to the rest of the country.
A Talarico win sends that playbook to the Senate floor – and with it, the judges and policy to match.
Ken Paxton has stood with Texas sheriffs.
He has prosecuted human smugglers.
He has used the Texas Attorney General's office to fight the Biden administration's open border policies every single step of the way.
James Talarico stood with the group that gave Shane James his freedom for $300.
He called their work "irreplaceable."
Six Texas families know exactly what that word cost them.
