America’s schools are failing while union bosses ignore the problem

There is no longer hiding the fact that America’s government-run schools are an abysmal failure.

And that fact is becoming more and more obvious by the year.

Despite more and more taxpayer dollars being spent on education, performance continues to plummet behind that of other countries.

This problem is especially bad in large, urban, districts that are almost universally governed by Democrats.

The teachers unions in these urban school districts have accumulated a decades-long record of failure to educate America’s failing students.

In Chicago, the plain and ugly truth has just been laid bare for all to see.

According to Illinoispolicy.org, more than 21,000 students in Chicago Public Schools – or CPS as the government-run school system is commonly-called – are being left behind.

That’s because they are attending schools run by teachers union bosses that fail to prepare them for life.

Ten percent of all elementary schools and high schools in Chicago don’t have basic competence in reading, science, and math.

The group also found that these students are significantly behind their peers in nearby suburban districts in almost every category.

Success in school is a direct link to success later in life because higher test scores correlate to more steady employment, greater wages, and higher self-confidence.

But unfortunately for these students and their parents, Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates is purposely failing to see the problem for what it is.

Instead of preparing kids for life with basic skills, she’s focused on furthering Democrat politics – like virtually all union bosses.

In fact, for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week, Fox News reported school kids would literally be shut out of school during the DNC and encouraged to volunteer for the Party instead of going to class.

Fox News wrote:

Chicago schools will be almost completely empty this week. That is by design: This year, district leaders pushed the usual start of the school year back by a week to help the city “accommodate an estimated influx of 75,000 visitors” and “[allow] time for students to attend, volunteer, and participate in the civic process of hosting the Convention.”

That’s right: 320,000 students are being kept out of school so they can watch a political party talk about the importance of education. Teachers are still expected to report to work for professional development days, and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is busing teachers to Soldier Field on Thursday night to watch Harris’ acceptance speech on the big screen.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Teachers Union boss was busy with radio interviews spewing Democrat talking points to excuse Chicago Schools failures.

In an interview with a Chicago radio station, Gates suggested that her students’ atrocious scores in math and reading should simply be ignored.

Teachers union President: Testing is racist

Gates is not only ignoring the problem but says that testing is just “junk science” rooted in “white supremacy.”

In an interview reported by the Wall Street Journal, she said, “The way in which we think about learning and think about achievement is really and truly based on testing, which at best is junk science rooted in white supremacy.”

She added, “If you have another hour, I can get into why standardized tests are born out of the eugenics movement. And the eugenics movement has always sought to see black people as inferior to those that are non-black…You can’t test black children with an instrument that was born to prove their inferiority. When people talk to me about testing alone, I have to trouble the waters and challenge that.”

Despite her unfounded contention that testing should be discarded, she still evidently doesn’t feel that the government-run school system is good enough for her family.

According to the Wall Street Journal, she sends her son to private school.

Well, of course she does.

The Wall Street Journal also reports that parents aren’t buying her gobbledygook.

Parent: “I’ve passed every standardized test and I want my children to be able to do it.”

One said in response to Gates, “I want to say as a parent, standardized testing, we’re not ready to move beyond that right now…How can we say that it’s a racist tool? It might be but let me say this to you, I’ve passed every standardized test and I want my children to be able to do it.”

With a teachers union boss intent on peddling victimhood over results it’s little wonder why so many parents are homeschooling or sending their children to private schools.
